Scenes of the South

More than eight hundred guests were in attendance at South magazine's 9th Annual Dine South Event hosted at Savannah Station on October 18 to celebrate the release of the October/November Food Film and Famous Folks issue. Guests to the exclusive event feasted on delicious food samples prepared by more than twenty regional restaurants and caterers while enjoying live entertainment from local Savannah band, Tell Scarlet as featured in this month's issue. A variety of activities and entertainment were available for attendees including; a Rock Climbing Wall provided by Boy Scouts of Coastal Georgia, Arial and Fire Dancing Performances by Stardust Pixies, Photo booth by TapSnap Mechanical Bull by Hunter Cattle Company, and a cast of Living Legend Characters from Old Savannah Tours. Proceeds from ticket sales went to benefit the Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire , who also hosted a silent auction and International Artist, Jon Moody was on hand to paint a beautiful food inspired canvas masterpiece during the evening which was auctioned off for the non-profit organization. South magazine kicked off Dine South Month at the "Other Cover" Release Party hosted at The Ordinary Pub on September 29, with the launch of the Food Film and Famous Folks hospitality cover that showcases a photo of the local Pub's mouth-watering, Oso Buco Wings. Guests at the event enjoyed flipping through the pages of the new Dine South issue while dining on tasty pub bites and sipping on happy hour specials. The 9th Annual Dine South Event will take place on October 6 at Savannah Station with proceeds going to benefit the Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire. The Telfair Museum's William Jay Society hosted their annual Masquerade in the Mansion event on October 29 inside the historic and haunted Telfair Mansion on Telfair Square. Guests got into the spirit of the evening by donning their mask for the red carpet photos before enjoying the evening's festivities that included, an unforgettable night of libations, live music and late night treats. The Second Annual Lowcountry Annie Oakley's Charity Clays Tournament was held on September 23 at the Forest City Gun Club to benefit the Dwaine and Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital of Savannah at Memorial Health. Following the tournament, guests enjoyed a special after party reception featuring, food prepared by Cotton & Rye chefs, Zach Schultz and Brandon Whitestone, Bourbon tasting, silent auction and musical entertainment by Two’s Enough. This event provides a wonderful opportunity for area sporting clays enthusiasts to support the region’s only children’s hospital serving the area from Charleston, SC to Jacksonville, FL. Members of the business community gathered at The Pirate's House Restaurant on September 21 to attend the monthly Buy Local Savannah luncheon. September's guest speaker was Rule Joyner, owner of 24e Furniture Store who discussed the challenges and success he's faced in the last fifteen years at his Broughton Street location. Joyner emphasized the need for local businesses to get involved in the community and fight for their rights on future issues that could adversely affect their bottom line. The monthly Martinis at the Mansion Event was held on September 21, featuring a night of power networking and fundraising to benefit the on the 21st to support the Matthew Reardon Center for Autism. Hosted on the third Wednesday of each month by South Magazine and the Mansion on Forsyth Park , attendees enjoy delicious five dollar martinis in addition to tasty food samples prepared by 700 Drayton Restaurant. The 200 Club of the Coastal Empire hosted a special reception for first responders at Savannah Quarters Golf Club on September 21. President, Mark Dana, gave a short presentation about the nonprofit organization to the audience before everyone enjoyed a buffet style dinner prepared by the club restaurant. More than two hundred guests traveled to Camp Lowe on Savannah's Rose Dhu Island on September 18 to attend the Second Annual Thin Mint Throwdown presented by the Historic Girl Scouts of Georgia. The evening began with a VIP reception and Silent Auction followed by dinner provided by Paul Kennedy Catering, followed by the ultimate dessert battle where the audience voted Lori Collins with Savannah Coffee Roasters as the winner for her frozen Tiramisu. The night concluded with an exciting live auction performed by Jere Myers with Jere's Antiques where thousands of dollars were raised for the local nonprofit organization. Home furnishings retailer, West Elm, celebrated the grand opening of its first Coastal Georgia location in Savannah's National Landmark Historic District on September 14. Dozens of attendees braved the wet weather from Tropical Storm Julia to attend the event and receive a 15% discount off of their purchase. with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the Historic Savannah Foundation. More than two hundred participants gathered at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Club on September 9 for the Community Heroes Golf Tournament hosted by the 200 Club of the Coastal Empire. Thirty-six teams of four players participated in the scramble tournament that honors first responders in the Coastal Empire who have lost their lives in the line of duty in addition to commemorating the fallen heroes of September 11, 2001. The morning kicked off with a special ceremony featuring, live bagpipe music, honor guard and fly by from the Chatham County Aviation Unit Helicopter. Hurricane Hermine couldn't stop hundreds of dedicated beer lovers from getting their brew on this Labor Day Weekend at the 9th Annual Savannah Craft Brew Festival on Saturday, September 3. Presented by Habersham Beverage and Southbound Brewing Company, this "crafty" event featured tasting from local and National beer and vendors in addition to beer related product booths on hand to showcase their best products and services. VIP ticket holders enjoyed an extra hour of exclusive tastings and special privileges before the general admission ticket holders came pouring in at 1pm. Hundreds of Savannah visitors, neighbors and long-time residents attended the 97th Birthday Celebration of famous, Leopold's Ice Cream Shop on August 20, closing down the block in front of the Broughton Street location for the afternoon. A sold out crowd packed into Grayson Stadium for the final Thursday Home Game of the Savannah Bananas Baseball Season. South Magazine welcomed clients and friends to join them on the VIP deck where visitors could pick up a copy of the magazine and meet the staff.

Emerging fashion designer and Savannah College of Art and Design Alumni, Danietté A. Thomas, hosted a fundraiser fashion show at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum on July 30 featuring samples from previous and current collections. Local business leaders, owners and guests met at the Pirate's House Restaurant on July 28th for the monthly Buy Local Savannah Lunch featuring guests from the Savannah Serves Program. Director of the City of Savannah Tourism and Ambassador Department, Bridget Liddy, who addressed the audience about the projects that her office tackles in addition to offering information about the new Ambassador phase of the serves program that has been live since February. Thousands of fans packed Historic Grayson Stadium on July 23rd for a special double header game, featuring a softball competition between law enforcement and fire fighters prior to the Savannah Bananas taking on the Lexington County Blowfish. The 200 Club of the Coastal Empire was the featured charity for the game and and five dollars from each ticket they sold went to benefit the non profit organization who provide financial assistance for families of first responders who have been killed or injured in the line of duty.
