Hurley Haywood

Hurley Haywood at the Vintage Auto Film Exhibition

When it comes to racing legends, you’d be hard-pressed to find a bigger name than Hurley Haywood. During the ’70s and ’80s, he was the poster boy for the sport, racing alongside fellow legend Peter Gregg as part of the storied Brumos Racing Team. As his legend grew, so too did the unspoken mandate that he hide – or at least not advertise – who he truly was.  For a gay man in the racing world, it was never easy.

Haywood didn’t come out publicly until the publication of his autobiography, “Hurley: From the Beginning.” That  revelation, along with footage of his greatest races and interviews with racing greats on Hurley’s legacy, plays a key role in the Patrick Dempsey-produced documentary film, “Hurley,” which will screen at this year’s Vintage Auto Film Exhibition, Oct. 31 on Hilton Head Island.
