Why the Best Beauty Routine May Be the One You Think About Less

If you learned beauty from YouTube in the mid-2010s, getting ready could practically qualify as a hobby.

Tati Westbrook reviewed drawers of products. Jeffree Star and James Charles made a “full beat” an event. And NikkieTutorials’ viral 2015 Power of Makeup transformation used a product list running well past 20 items, from primer and contour to multiple eye shadows, liners and false lashes.

Skincare was expanding too, as the now-famous 10-step K-beauty routine introduced Western consumers to essences, ampoules, sheet masks and double cleansing.

A decade later, the aspiration looks different.

Skinimalism, clean-girl makeup and low-maintenance hair have all pushed beauty toward a simpler proposition: what if looking put-together required thinking about your appearance less often?

Here’s why we love the shift:

  • Because We Traded the Razor for Longer-Lasting Results

There is nothing inherently wrong with shaving. The annoying part is having to do it again. And again. And somehow always on the morning you are already running late.

We remember how, when bikini line laser hair removal became a huge thing, women everywhere seemed to collectively exhale. Finally, there was an option that did not involve remembering to shave before every beach day, date, vacation or spontaneous trip to the pool.

That is what makes it fit so neatly into today’s lower-maintenance approach to beauty. You put in more effort upfront through a series of appointments, but the goal is to spend far less time thinking about hair removal afterward.

  • Because Skincare Stopped Needing Its Own Bathroom Shelf

The 10-step routine had its moment, we’re not going to deny it. So did the bathroom cabinet filled with acids, essences, ampoules, masks and serums whose exact order required a Google search.

But skinimalism offered something almost radical by comparison: keep the products your skin actually benefits from and stop treating more steps as evidence that you are taking better care of it.

Cleanser. Moisturizer. SPF. Perhaps one or two targeted products that genuinely earn their spot.

It is less photogenic than a shelf full of coordinated bottles, admittedly. But there is something luxurious about knowing what works, using it consistently and not wondering whether tonight is supposed to be your retinol, exfoliation or recovery night.

  • Because Our Hair Is Allowed to Grow Out Now

There was a particular kind of beauty maintenance that came with knowing your roots were showing.

Fresh highlights looked fantastic. Six weeks later, the obvious line between salon color and natural hair quietly started reminding you to make another appointment.

Lived-in color changed the brief.

Balayage, root smudges, bronde and softer highlights are deliberately designed to blend with natural growth rather than fight it. The result is hair that can still look intentional months after the salon visit.

And that may be the best definition of low-maintenance hair and beauty overall: not choosing something because it requires zero upkeep, but because it does not suddenly start looking “unfinished” the moment real life gets in the way of maintaining it.

  • Because Our Lashes Can Be Ready Before We Are

Curl lashes. Apply mascara. Separate the lashes that stuck together. Remove the tiny mascara smudge from your eyelid. Repeat tomorrow.

None of those steps is particularly difficult. But that is almost the point. Beauty routines are often less exhausting because of one huge task than because of ten tiny ones repeated every single morning.

A lash lift takes the opposite approach. Curl and, if you want, tint your natural lashes periodically so they already have some of the effect you would usually create each day.

It is the beauty equivalent of meal prepping: slightly more effort at once in exchange for considerably less decision-making when it is 7:40 a.m. and you should have left the house ten minutes ago.

  • Because Brows No Longer Need to Be Drawn From Scratch

Anyone who lived through peak 2016 Instagram brows remembers the equipment:

  • pencil
  • pomade
  • angled brush
  • concealer underneath for the impossibly clean edge
  • brow gel to make sure none of that carefully constructed architecture moved.

The newer approach is much more interested in making the brows already on your face easier to work with.

A good shape, occasional tint or brow lamination can mean waking up with brows that need little more than brushing into place. Not because perfectly groomed eyebrows have suddenly stopped mattering, but because spending ten minutes recreating the same eyebrow every morning has lost some of its appeal.

We still want the result. We are simply getting much pickier about how much daily labor it deserves.
