What Have They Done? The Secrets of the Rich and Famous (& Why You Should Never Compare)

One thing is for sure: it’s no secret that the beauty of Hollywood is not always completely natural.

While most of the world and the famous elite have become more open about procedures they have had to stay youthful, many choose to keep their beauty protocols a secret. Through photos, however, the trained eye can often surmise what procedures they have had to fight off father time’s cruelty. I’m here to break down some of the common procedures that some of the most well known celebs have likely had performed (and they may be more attainable than you think).

Rhinoplasty is a common procedure that involves reshaping and refining the appearance of the nose. Depending on the patient, it can include straightening the nose, eliminating dorsal humps (or “bumps”), and making the nose smaller. Recovery is typically 1-2 weeks.

A blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, can be done to upper and/or lower eyelids. This procedure involves trimming excess skin and fat to improve heavy upper eyelids or lower eyelid nags, thus giving the eye a more open, brighter appearance. Recovery for this procedure is approximately 1 week of social downtime and involves minimal pain.

Brow lifts typically involve making small incisions in the scalp and placing anchoring sutures or devices to pull the brow back into its proper position, as the brow will naturally lower and sag with age. This procedure is commonly performed concurrently with a blepharoplasty. Recovery time for this procedure is approximately one week.

Neurotoxin, commonly referred to as Botox, is a solution that is injected into the facial muscles. This decreases movement of muscles that cause wrinkles. Commonly treated areas include the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes. Results can be first noticed at 3-5 days, peaking at 2 weeks, and typically lasting 3-4 months.

Dermal fillers are an injectable gel that are placed under the skin to replace lost volume due to age. They are commonly placed in the lips, cheeks, temples, and under the eyes. Results are noticeable immediately and last from 9-12 months, depending on product used and its placement.

Hollywood would love to have you believe that celebs age completely naturally. In some cases this may be true. But for the majority, it takes a team of experts fine-tuning and refining the face as they age. Remember, this select population has these highly trained professionals and procedures readily available at their fingertips. They also have the luxury of filters, airbrushing, and professional make-up artists and stylists.

As an aesthetic NP, I have one piece of advice: Always embrace yourself from the inside out first, regardless of your imperfections. We all have insecurities. Love yourself despite them. And if you do find that you want to improve yourself through a procedure, give yourself grace. There is nothing wrong with becoming more confident in yourself. Be unashamed in your pursuit of becoming the best version of yourself.
