The Monday 5 Things with D. Paul Graham

Monday 5 Things…..Learning To Fly. Again…..

I took occasion this past week to re-read one of my favorite books.  Each page a reminder of the thrill of learning to soar, being true to yourself, flying in the face of conformity, and accepting that not all will understand you or your passion.  As we race to the end of yet another year, if you haven’t read this gem, pick it up.  If you have read it, (I first read this in grade school), do yourself a favor and re-read this classic novella by Richard Bach. Today M5T looks at the beauty of living life fully and the importance of giving back to others, through the voice, the eyes, and the wings of Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

1.  You decide.

Others will try to dictate how you should live and even those closest to you won’t understand.  Only you can choose to live the deepest passions in your life.  ““Why, Jon, why?" his mother asked. "Why is it so hard to be like the rest of the flock, Jon? Why can't you leave low flying to the pelicans, the albatross? Why don't you eat? Son, you're bone and feathers!" "I don't mind being bone and feathers mom. I just want to know what I can do in the air and what I can't, that's all. I just want to know.””

2.  You will need more.

At some point, you’ll grow tired of material things.  “There’s got to be more to life than fighting for fish heads.  His sorrow was not solitude, it was that other gulls refused to believe the glory of flight that awaited them.  They refused to open their eyes and see.”

3.  When you fly, fly higher.

Learn to fly as high as possible.  Only then will you understand who you really are and appreciate your calling in life.  “The gull sees farthest who flies highest.”

4.  You will need to step out.

There will come a day when you need to step out in faith in what you believe in.  “When you come to the edge of all the light you have known, and are about to step out into darkness, faith is knowing one of two things will happen:  there will be something for you to stand on, or you will be taught to fly.”

5.  You will need to give back.

The gift of living a dream comes with the responsibility of giving back, teaching, forgiving where needed, and not leaving others behind.  “Keep working on love.”

Here’s to a week of soaring higher, and sharing with others what you see from the sky.
