The 23rd Annual Polo for Charity event this Sunday

The Rotary Club of Okatie will host its 23rd Annual Polo for Charity event is this Sunday, October 23.

If you've never been to a polo match before, think “Pretty Woman”. But keep in mind that here in the South, we've seasoned the ancient sport of kings to taste a little more homegrown than its more sophisticated counterparts up North. Down here, we sympathize with Miss Vivian Ward, who donned that fabulous brown and white silk polka dot dress but couldn't help but feel a little out of place amongst a sea of snooty high-class spectators.

Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in classic film, Pretty Woman.

“One of the things that really breathes a lot of life into the polo event, much like with any polo event, is the fashion,” said Anneliza Itkor, an emcee of the event. Like Roberts' character in the 1990 film, she promises that dozens of pretty women will be dressing to the nines. But you can also expect to find a wildly eclectic mix of attire ranging from jean jackets and cowboy boots to beautiful, flowing chiffon dresses.

If you're fretting what to wear – don't! Finding the perfect ensemble is the best part of the whole affair. We've put together a few options from local Savannah boutiques to help you choose an outfit that stands out and embraces your personality.

For more information about the event call Barbara McFadden at 843-298-3055 or rotarypolo@hotmail.com (find additional event details below).

As far as shoes go, some show up in heels while others wear a cute pair of sandals. But Itkor said if you plan on joining in the age-old polo tradition of stomping the divots, make sure to bring a comfortable pair of flats.

Of course, the most important part of any fabulous polo ensemble is the hat. Make sure to choose a hat carefully – there will be a best hat contest at this polo match. “The general approach is the bigger, the better,” Itkor said. “You want to have that big, bold, slightly crazy hat.” She said some women wear beautiful hats with huge feathers and flowers while others wear big, broad-rimmed hats.

And gentlemen, don’t assume that the fashionable ensembles are only for the women. “We see a lot of guys sporting linen, seersucker and bowties,” Leister said.

Even children get in on the fashion at this polo match. Itkor said she loves to see the matching mother/daughter dresses and hats.
