After first bonding through FEMA missions to restore power to hurricane-ravaged areas across the Eastern Seaboard and Puerto Rico, Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Jim Lee and Architect Ryan Murphy opened their drone photography business, formerly Shamrock Drones, in 2017.
Now called Shamrock+, the company has a different focus, and Lee said he wishes he could tell their younger selves not to buy so many drones.
“It’s kind of funny because we branched out into this drone world because we felt that drones [were] the innovation of the future,” Lee said. “But eventually, we were kind of pulled back to our roots in construction, architecture and engineering.”
The Savannah-based company works directly with such firms to address their projects’ visual needs, ranging from reality capture of existing buildings to generating interactive 3D models and building tours. While still providing real estate and drone photography services, Shamrock+ has evolved to serve a more technical clientele.
“It’s not just a pie-in-a-sky 3D model that no one knows how to do anything with,” Murphy said. “We are one of the few companies, if not the only, that does an in-house conversion to whatever format our clients now need.”
However, every day is a little different. From photographing luxury vacation rentals to gathering information for a government agency’s accident investigation, the company prides itself on its teammates’ flexibility. The result is a company where employees enjoy doing something a little different every day. In its constantly changing industry, the company loves how its exciting work and flexible teammates contribute to a genuinely fun company culture.
With its talent-packed team of professional photographers, videographers, and CAD/BIM draftspeople, the company has served hundreds of clients and generated thousands of 3D spaces. Shamrock+ is also expanding its operations into Atlanta, Coastal Georgia and the South Carolina Low Country.
Over the business’s five-year lifespan, Shamrock+ has shifted its services and operations to best serve the needs of its clients. As Lee put it, problem-solving is their business model.
“What we’d really like people to know is, if they have a problem, whether it’s in the virtual or visual type of arena, they should call us first,” Lee said. “If it’s anything visual, we can usually help them.”
