Savannah Sends One of It's Own to Charleston Fashion Week

Savannah designer and owner of Mix Julep clothing line, Kathryn Hayes found inspiration through painting. She applies eye-catching colors to a variety of fabrics to create her resort and about-town fashions. The up-and-coming designer was featured at the prestigious Charleston Fashion Week.

Born and bred right here in Savannah, G.A., Kathryn Hayes is a wife, a mother of two, and a fledgling fashion designer whose rising star is getting noticed across the South.

Hayes is the owner and designer of local fashion brand Mix Julep, a colorful collection of high-end women’s clothing sold in boutiques around the area. Known for its brightly hued patterns, contemporary cuts and luxe fabrics, Mix Julep specializes in women’s resort wear to smartly outfit the modern woman for her next vacation – or right here at home in Savannah.

Originally starting out on the interior design career path, Hayes graduated from the University of Alabama with an interior design degree and worked in the field for a few years. She then focused her efforts full time on raising her two children, with an eventual return to the workforce in the back of her mind – she just wasn’t sure what career to pursue. But her creative juices began flowing when she began painting after her second child was born, and she didn’t stop there.

Her creativity came into full bloom in 2013 when she started Mix Julep, and Hayes has worked diligently since then to grow her business into the popular brand it is now.

"It’s about not giving up. It’s not easy,” said Hayes. “But when you find something you really love doing, it’s a good thing."

Hayes was recently selected to present her latest line, the Resort 2018 collection, at Charleston Fashion Week in March, an honor bestowed upon only 16 up-and-coming Southern designers. As a competition, the 16 designers will present eight looks to compete for the grand prize of $10,000, and the attention and respect of the fashion world. “I was excited to be chosen,” Hayes said. “I thought it was a long shot, but I was excited because I’m ready to take this business to the next level.”
