LUNA, a previous Lonely Heart at the HSGS and the dog that started it all.

On Friday, February 25th, Rule of Three Gallery will present “Lonely Hearts”, an exhibition highlighting the Humane Society of Greater Savannah’s very own long term residents and adoptable dogs.

In 2018, local artist Stephanie Forbes began collaborating with the Humane Society by painting adoptable dogs at the shelter, free of charge, for people who adopted dogs to keep the portraits. It was Forbes’ way of offering support to the conversation and intention of getting dogs at HSGS adopted! Since opening RO3 Gallery, Forbes now seeks to bring in the Lonely Heart candidates to the gallery for an opportunity to dive back into the project that was started a few years ago in a more compelling and engaging way.

This exhibition will feature over 10 dogs who have, since being surrendered, earned the title of ‘Lonely Heart,’ dogs who have been in the shelter for over 30 days and some up to 6 months. Each dog will be photographed at the shelter and then painted on canvas, by local artist and gallery owner Stephanie Forbes, for their very own custom dog portrait. These portraits will seek to capture each dog’s personalities and charm, and offer a new and more dynamic way to view adoptable dogs; By being placed in a contemporary gallery setting.

During the exhibition reception, the Lonely Heart candidates will be on site at the gallery, monitored by HSGS volunteers, and available for adoption. If a Lonely Heart is adopted, the new parent will keep the custom dog portrait, displayed in the exhibition free of charge.

This exhibition will be a great opportunity for an audience to view the Lonely Heart dogs of HSGS in a different light, and outside of the typical shelter environment as they become subjects for a contemporary art exhibition and apart of an exciting collaboration between The Humane Society of Greater Savannah and Rule of Three Gallery, Savannah’s newest gallery on Montgomery Street. The exhibition will also highlight all of the countless and insurmountable efforts of HSGS in and for the community of Greater Savannah.
