For more than a year, mother-son duo Cristol and Shane Johnson and their team have been serving up the best dang biscuits and donuts to the downtown Savannah area. Right in the heart of Broughton Street, Rise’s smaller space allows for a cozier environment and more efficient donut and biscuit making. All donuts and biscuits are made from scratch throughout the day, with 11 different flavors being made at any given time. The work begins early in the morning—midnight to be precise—with bakers making batches of donuts, which takes around three hours. But don’t let the beauty of the biscuits (and donuts, of course) distract you from the other items Rise has to offer. From signature sandwiches, such as the bacon, fried egg, and cheese sandwich, to buttermilk biscuit sandwiches, such as the fried green tomato, their menu is always evolving towards their Southern roots to make tomorrow better than yesterday.
