Proactive Health Prevents Disease

Dr. Mary Kay Ross works with you to construct a proactive game plan for you to achieve optimal health.
Practice makes perfect. That is a motto never truer than for Mary Kay Ross, MD, the founder of the Institute for Personalized Medicine, whose own practice was the result from years of working in multiple emergency and trauma centers across the nation, including Savannah’s own Memorial. Countless patients came under her care and what Dr. Ross realized was most patients suffered from often preventable conditions including obesity, depression, and heart problems. Dr. Ross’s own path to functional medicine started in 2012 after she herself became a patient as a result of a biotoxin exposure. She was diagnosed with autoimmune thyroid disease, psoriatic arthritis, and a heart condition. Unsatisfied with treatment options presented to her, she quickly realized that she needed a different approach and immersed herself in functional medicine training. She then treated herself using a regimen including supplements, diet, targeted medications and lifestyle modification. During this time, she would come to learn the core theme of functional medicine which is to determine the root cause of illness rather than merely treating symptoms.
Excited about her new knowledge, Dr. Ross opened the Institute for Personalized Medicine providing Savannah with a place where patients could be evaluated and treated utilizing a functional approach. Six years later, Dr. Ross continues her quest to provide proactive preventable care to patients before reactive treatment is needed. The day to day mission for Dr. Ross’s Institute for Personalized Medicine (IPM) remains to provide the citizens of the lowcountry with an option of a proactive and progressive medical practice specializing in the methods of functional medicine as a means to heal and ultimately reverse symptoms of those living with chronic illnesses. According to Dr. Mary Kay Ross, functional medicine came about “because our current medical model doesn’t adequately answer the problem of chronic illness, we are seeing in today’s society.” as she explains. “The 21st century physician will be the physician that looks for the root cause of illness. We are a culmination of our exposures through life, our lifestyles and our genetics. The day of the pill for the ill is over. Patients expect more from their doctors and health providers.”

In 2010, Dr. Ross left the emergency room to devote her efforts full-time towards helping her patients achieve true healing though the use of functional medicine. Dr. Ross believes that medicine is evolving and physicians become better by learning continually. In 2016, Dr. Ross partnered with Dr. Dale Bredesen to apply her knowledge and clinical expertise to patients suffering from cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Today, Dr. Ross is regarded nationally as the leading provider utilizing a multimodal approach protocol addressing all aspects of brain health. She firmly believes that this is an exciting time to be practicing medicine. Dr. Ross is committed to her beliefs and is passionate about the medicine she practices. She is a tireless patient advocate and is relentless in her pursuit for solving complex medical cases.
The 21st Century Epidemic:
Neurodegenerative diseases are rapidly becoming more prominent in our society. Alzheimer’s disease has become the third leading cause of death in America second only to cardiovascular disease and cancer. If you are a female aged 65 or older you are more likely to die from Alzheimer’s Disease than breast cancer. There have been over 450 failed drug trials designed to combat Alzheimer’s Disease with no solution. Out of the 10 leading deadly diseases in America Alzheimer’s disease is the only one with no cure or treatment plan. Monotherapy is failing to provide an effective solution. Dr. Dale Bredesen a UCLA neurologist has been researching Alzheimer’s disease for 30 years and has realized that a functional multimodal approach can reverse or halt the progression of the disease. Dr. Ross has been working closely with Dr. Bredesen as his Chief Medical Officer for the past 2.5 years.
