"Monday 5 Things" with D. Paul Graham

Five Words For A New Year…..

Long time M5T’ers know that your scribe does not believe in New Year resolutions largely because of my belief that such resolutions tend to set one up for failure.  I prefer to focus and plan for success.  For the last 15 years or so, rather making resolutions, I have chosen words to integrate into my life that will move me, inspire me, challenge me, and change me in the new year.  Here are my Five Words for 2018.

1.  Measured

We all know the areas of our lives that we can take control of and master for positive outcomes.  Areas that we can continual improve and build on with the abilities and aptitudes that are uniquely our own.  Understanding and taking command of the areas of our lives that will bring the most fulfillment, the most joy, and the most satisfaction, not only for ourselves, but for those that surround our lives.

2.  Magnify

Focus on our strengths.  Look closer, with honesty, at our true motives.  Enlarge our sense of self while expanding our hearts for others.  Give ourselves permission to dream large – larger than we ever dared to in our lives.

3. Mitigate

Avoid mediocrity.  Abhor negativity.  Replace good intentions with real action and commitment.  Purge negative people and destructive internal conversations that we have with ourselves.  Remove masks, take risks, and refuse to allow others to play games with our time, our focus, and our emotions.

4. Million

Not in a monetary sense.  Rather, take a million looks, to regain sight of the things we ignore because of familiarity.  A million looks to meander and marvel through the rediscovery of the common, and encounters with the new, the fresh, the unknown. A million looks for a greater appreciation for the people around us and the tremendous blessings in our lives.

5.  Meaning

Live a purposeful life with gratitude.  Understand and accept our gifts, our talents, and then put them to use, without excuse or hesitation.  Embrace difficulties, challenges, and pain in our lives as reasons to change, learn, and grow. Don’t just hope for the best, be determined and resolute in accepting only the best.  Model a life of focus, resolve, and the tenacity to keep moving forward on our chosen paths.

Here’s to a year of living out whatever your five words will be.  Wishing all M5T readers much growth in 2018.
