"Monday 5 Things" with D. Paul Graham

Monday 5 Things…..Give A Little Bit…..

During a decidedly un-spirited drive, whilst pondering life meandering through oak covered streets of this genteel Hostess City of the South, a set of Supertramp songs came on the radio. The albums played harkened me back to my youth and the many great friends that I had growing up in Thunder Bay. “Give A Little Bit” made me think about what it means to give to others in a way that makes a difference and hence sparked this morning’s M5T.

1.  Money

Likely this is your easiest way to give. All charities need money to survive and thrive. Over the years I have been amazed at how a little money can make a huge change to lives, especially in third-world countries. We all have an inner altruistic side that recognizes the importance of helping others. Your money is a very tangible, albeit easy way to give and forget.

2.  Time

Time may be more valuable than point #1 because it’s a part of your life that you can’t get back once you use it for anything other than yourself. You have unique gifts and talents that can help others. Be a mentor. If a child is genuinely interested and asks you something, take the opportunity as a teaching moment. Volunteer, get involved in your community. Pick a cause you can get passionate about. Serve. Understand what your time in service can mean to someone or an organization.

3.  Attention

Put your phone down. Listen. Turn the narrative off in your head and really listen to what someone else is saying. Look someone directly in the eye. Make someone feel like they are the only person in the room. Be present. Be focused. Be intentional. Be real.

4.  Affirmation

Affirmation is an extremely powerful gift that you can give someone. You can change someone’s perspective on their day, their week, or perhaps even their life by affirming who they are. Encourage their aspirations, dreams and unmet desires. Empathize with their problems, sorrows and fears… then be there for them.

5.  Yoda

The sage of Star Wars said it best…“Try no. Do or do not. There is not try.” In other words, don’t give half-heartedly. Give without expectations or strings attached. Give often. Give generously.

Here’s to a week of reckless, unfettered giving.
