"Monday 5 Things" with D. Paul Graham
Monday 5 Things…..Of Theodore…..
It has been a week of ruminating over a childhood past, countries visited, friends made, dreams in development, overcoming fears, recognizing mistakes and embracing victories…all wrapped up with the joys and sorrows of a life in progress. A meander through a book store with a cup of extortionately priced java in hand, I found myself passing time while thumbing through some tomes by the renowned philosopher, poet and artist, Theodore Geisel. You may know him by his noms de plume: Theo LeSieg, Rosetta Stone, or more commonly Dr. Seuss. Today’s M5T is brought to you by the brilliance of the man who created Horton, a Cat, a Grinch, multiple Fish, Sneetches, a Lorax, and even Green Eggs and Ham.
1. Of Fun
“It’s fun to have fun, but you have to know how.” Oh, the profundity of this quote. In a day and age that we seemingly have lost the ability to really have fun, the Cat in the Hat is a great reminder that we need to consciously take time to experience, to laugh, to marvel, to not take ourselves so damn seriously and just go and have some fun.
2. Of One
“You have to be odd to be number one.” “You are you. Now isn’t that pleasant.” Stand out from the crowd. Stop being your own worst critic. Learn to love yourself first. Define yourself, don’t let others tell you who you should be. Celebrate who you are without apology, fear or explanation.
3. Of Present
“Oh, the things you can find if you don’t stay behind.” “You'll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut.” Be present and embrace the highest mountains and the lowest valleys. Discover, explore, learn, experience the world around you. Never stop seeking wisdom.
4. Of Thinking
“Oh, the thinks you can think!” “Think and wonder, wonder and think.” Take some time to sit quietly and just think. Think about your blessings, your gifts, your loves, and all that you have to be thankful for. It’s a marvel what positive thinking can do for your head, your heart, and your soul.
5. Of Dreams.
"It's not about what it is, it's about what it can become." Enough said on this, with thanks to the Lorax.
Here’s to a week of re-recognizing who you are and shaping a life worth living.
