“Monday 5 Things” ™….. “So That’s”…..

A good but somewhat insane week, combined with time in my happy place, unexpected surprises, admissions received and given, and a bit of writer’s block left your scribe in a quandary as to this morning’s M5T. While sipping a refreshing cleansing local ale watching a Wisconsin sunset over Elkhart Lake on Friday night, I found myself thinking about what is most important to me in life. At some point between the second cleansing ale, and hearing Spyro Gyra’s ‘Ariana’ played by the live band on the small stage, I found myself thinking about my personal ‘so that’.  Thankful for past M5T’s, I share some “So That” thoughts again.

Thirty some odd years ago, a pastor taught me an invaluable life lesson. I was uncertain about some decisions that I had to make. He asked me about my motives behind the need for these decisions, explaining that our “So That” is the reason we purposefully follow particular paths in life. Choices and definitive decisions are made, “So That” you live your life a certain way, for a specific, often-times, higher purpose. To this day, when facing major decisions in life, whether personal or in business, I ask myself these questions to get to my “So That”.

1. A Mission.

Why do I want this? The best decisions are made when motives lead to choices that align values with a personal mission statement.

2. A Contribution.

Will it be a distraction of nursing selfish desires, or will it contribute to my calling in life?

3. A Reason.

Will it matter one week, one month, or one year from now? Will it be fleeting and temporal, or enduring and permanent?

4. A Difference.

Why is it important? Will it really make a difference in my life, or others?

5. A Cost.

What will it cost, not only for myself, but for those closest to me? Will the choice lead to a positive force that build ups, or a negative weight that destroys?

Here’s to a week of understanding, defining, and living your personal So That.
