“Monday 5 Things”™…..Not So Common…..

Four different conversations with four different people last week all brought up the ‘lack of common sense’. We all agreed that, today it seems, common sense is anything but common. Once again culling my collection of quotes and some prior M5T’s, I humbly offer up some quotes about sensical matters.

1. Mind your own business.

“Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.” Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

2. Seek excellence.

“Because there are three classes of intellects: one which comprehends by itself; another which appreciates what others comprehend; and a third which neither comprehends by itself nor by the showing of others; the first is the most excellent, the second is good, the third is useless.” Niccolò Machiavelli, The Prince

3. Prudence vs. folly.

“All who are prudent act with their knowledge, but fools expose their folly.” Proverbs 13:16

4. Learned wisdom.

“From the errors of other nations, let us learn wisdom.” Thomas Paine, Common Sense

5. Blessing vs. misery.

The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries. Winston Churchill

I came across a book called Rise Up and Salute the Sun written by film director and poet Suzy Kassem and thought this was in keeping with today’s M5T.

To All Mankind:
Speak kind words to mankind, and the unkind will attack you.
Speak common sense using any of your senses, and you will be attacked by the senseless.
Speak truth, and you will be attacked by the untruthful.
Speak about absolutely nothing, and absolutely nothing will speak back, but then nothing at all
will ever change.”

Here’s to a week of shunning common non-sense, seeking wisdom, and having the courage to speak the truth to bring about change
