Meet the Speakers of SCADstyle 2017

SCAD presents SCADstyle, an annual gathering of international design luminaries and influencers sharing their expertise with the next generation of creators, visionaries and artists.

Honorary chair Imran Amed, founder of the Business of Fashion, headlines the 2017 iteration of this weeklong event, featuring captivating, inspiring and forward-thinking lectures, panels and workshops at SCAD locations in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia, and Hong Kong.

Check out the following style visionaries that will be speaking at SCADstyle 2017:

 

1. Fashionista's Faran Krentcil discusses her experience in fashion journalism

Hear Faran Krentcil, style journalist and creator of Fashionista, share how she mixed commentary, breaking news and human-interest content to set the tone for the fashion news site she founded in 2007. Krentcil's lecture, "Realities of Fashion Media," also covers her experience writing for fashion magazines and brands.

Krentcil served as Nylon magazine’s first digital director from 2008 to 2014. She is a contributing editor for Elle magazine and writes for Glamour, W and New York magazines. She has collaborated with brands including Tiffany & Co., Marc Jacobs, Topshop and Diane von Furstenberg.

2. Explore 'Shinola: The Brand,' in lecture with entrepreneur Tom Kartsotis

Tom Kartsotis, the founder of Fossil, will discuss the establishment of his most recent brand, Shinola, a high-end watch, bicycle and leather goods company, and why he chose Detroit, Michigan, for the label’s headquarters. Created in 2011, Shinola advocates for the preservation of American craftsmanship and high-quality production, and has been lauded by publications including the Washington Post and The New York Times.

Kartsotis founded Fossil in 1984 and served as chairman through 2010. His portfolio also includes Bedrock Manufacturing Co., a private equity and brand development firm, and Filson, an outdoor apparel and lifestyle brand. He has served on the board of directors for Burton Snowboards since 2004.

3. L’Oreal Luxe’s Carol Hamilton discusses the beauty industry in conversation with Jessica Matlin

Join SCAD for "The Evolution of the Beauty Industry," a conversation with Group President of L’Oreal Luxe USA Carol Hamilton and Jessica Matlin, beauty and health director at Teen Vogue, and co-creator and co-host of the podcast "Fat Mascara." Since joining the global cosmetics company in 1984, Hamilton has been integral to its international success. Her expertise in product innovation and marketing helped lead L'Oréal Paris to become the largest cosmetics brand in the U.S.

Hamilton is now responsible for the strategic evolution of the company’s luxury brand portfolio, which includes many of L’Oréal’s most recognized beauty and fragrance lines, including Kiehl's, Diesel and Ralph Lauren, as well as European labels Lancôme, Yves Saint Laurent and Viktor&Rolf.

4. The Business of Fashion’s Imran Amed addresses 'The State of Fashion'

Join Imran Amed, founder and CEO of The Business of Fashion and SCADstyle 2017 honorary chair, as he describes "The State of Fashion." Throughout this conversation, Amed will discuss what the future holds for the industry, such as technology-driven accessories, see-now, buy-now jewelry and unisex collections.

Fascinated by fashion’s intriguing blend of creativity and commerce, London-based Amed began writing a blog in 2007, which later became The Business of Fashion. With his sharp analysis of key market patterns and changes, he quickly garnered a loyal readership and extensive roster of global contributors. The Business of Fashion now has 1 million unique visitors per month and more than 3 million followers on social media.

5. Discover how interior design influences the retail experience with Ryan Korban and Lauren Sherman

SCAD presents “Designing Space,” a conversation with interior designer Ryan Korban and Lauren Sherman, New York editor for The Business of Fashion.

Korban is known for his eclectic use of exotic patterns, textural fabrics and sleek surfaces to create sophisticated spaces for discerning clientele. Drawing on inspirations ranging from Monet paintings to Helmut Newton photographs, Korban creates seductive, wondrous designs that transcend and redefine traditional interiors for a new generation.

He has designed interiors for fashion houses such as Alexander Wang, Altuzarra, Balenciaga and, most recently, shoe label Aquazzura. His portfolio also extends to the homes of prominent figures in the worlds of music and film, including actor James Franco.

6. Consider the importance of craftsmanship with designer Billy Reid

Join SCAD for "Developing a Brand," a conversation with fashion designer Billy Reid.

Emphasizing U.S. manufacturing and textile development, Reid’s brand reflects his personal authenticity and the value of quality craftsmanship. Inspired by childhood memories of his mother's boutique, Reid studied at The Art Institute of Dallas in Texas, before working at Saks Fifth Avenue and Reebok. He debuted his menswear collection, William Reid, in 1998, shortly before launching his first womenswear collection a few seasons later. In 2004, Reid opened the first Billy Reid stores in Texas and Alabama.

7. Learn about 'Branding Your Creative Business' with illustrator, author Dallas Shaw

Fashion illustrator and author Dallas Shaw will share her experience sketching original drawings for iconic labels during her lecture "Branding Your Creative Business." Shaw’s clients include Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Kate Spade, Harper’s Bazaar, Essie, Victoria’s Secret, Marc Jacobs Beauty, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and Christian Louboutin.

Following the lecture, Shaw will be available to sign her recently released, debut book "The Way She Wears It: The Ultimate Insider’s Guide to Revealing Your Personal Style," published by William Morrow. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

8. Opening receptions for 'Shoes: Pleasure and Pain'

Join us for a reception celebrating "Shoes: Pleasure and Pain," an exhibition exploring the creativity, cultural significance and transformative power of shoes. The exhibition, organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, includes more than 200 pairs of shoes spanning nearly two millennia, from ancient Egyptian slippers and Qing dynasty boots, to seductive stilettos by contemporary masters Christian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik, and to daring, futuristic forms created with new materials and the latest technology. SCAD FASH is honored to be the sole venue in the southeastern U.S. selected to host this captivating and comprehensive exhibition.

9. Norma Kamali considers how the fashion industry has evolved

SCAD presents "The Evolving Fashion Industry," a conversation with designer Norma Kamali, who was christened "the arbiter of inventive clothes" by Women’s Wear Daily.

Kamali’s eponymous women’s brand includes lines for fashion, fitness, health and beauty. Her signature silhouettes — High-Heeled Sneakers, the Sleeping Bag Coat and the Parachute Collection — are iconic, and she is often credited with bringing functional, everyday sportswear to the lexicon of high fashion.
