Mark Your Calendars for These Upcoming Shows at the Lucas Theatre
The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is pleased to announce the 2017-18 Lucas Theatre for the Arts season, including partnerships with BroadwayHD, National Theatre Live, and the Bolshoi Ballet.
Throughout the year, live and streaming performances and concerts will join family-friendly programming—Disney Classic matinees and a new “Celebrating the Trilogy” film series—alongside community favorites such as the Savannah Children’s Choir, Savannah Philharmonic, Savannah Music Festival, Savannah Ballet Theatre, and Savannah Film Festival screenings.
Through an exciting partnership with online theater streaming service, BroadwayHD, select theater content from the brand’s video on-demand library will now be available on The Lucas screen.

National Theatre Live launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of the National Theatre production of “Phèdre” starring Helen Mirren. The organization has broadcast more than forty other live productions from the National Theatre and other UK venues. The broadcasts have been experienced by 6.5 million people in over 2,000 venues in 60+ countries.
The Bolshoi Ballet will open its doors to North American cinema audiences for the fourth consecutive season, presented by BY Experience and Pathé Live. Each ballet performance will be preceded by a 20-minute “pre-show” offering views of Moscow and the Bolshoi Theatre, interviews with dancers, and the season trailer.

Live Performances
In July, the Savannah Children’s Choir will present its end-of-camp concert and a preview of the season to come.
Two renditions of holiday classics with the “Great Russian Nutcracker” performed by the Moscow Ballet and “The Nutcracker” performed by the Savannah Ballet Theatre in December 2017. The Savannah Ballet Theatre will again take the stage in April 2018 to perform “The Little Mermaid.”
Annual festivals such as the 2017 Savannah Film Festival and 2018 The Savannah Music Festival will accompany live concerts including Grammy winners Patty Griffin and Lee Ann Womack – who have made Savannah one of nine stops on their joint acoustic tour, Velvet Caravan and The Equinox Jazz Orchestra. Additional concerts will be announced throughout the year.
The Savannah Philharmonic 2017-2018 season will feature productions of “Thousand and One Nights,” “From the New World,” “Royal Baroque” and “Tchaikovsky and Brahms.”
Livestreamed Performances
Featured BroadwayHD performances will include “Cyrano de Bergerac,” the ensemble Strangeman & Co.’s “The Woodsman,” Arthur Miller’s “Incident at Vichy,” and Sam Shepard's Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Buried Child” starring Ed Harris, and the Tony Award-winning musical “She Loves Me.”
National Theatre Live productions will include “Salomé” from acclaimed theatre director Yaël Farber; Peter Shaffer’s “Amadeus” starring Lucian Msamat; and Simon Stone’s “Yerma,” with Billie Piper reprising her Best Actress award-winning role, among many.
The Bolshoi Ballet’s robust new season will feature awe-inspiring reconstructions of historical ballets such as “Le Corsaire,” “Flames of Paris,” as well as brilliant productions based on literary masterpieces “The Lady of the Camellias,” “The Taming of the Shrew,” and a new version of “Romeo and Juliet.” With audience favorites “Giselle” and “Coppélia,” ballet in cinema from the Bolshoi remains peerless.
Cinema Screenings
Disney Classic animated films will screen on Sunday afternoons from June 18 – Aug. 13 beginning at 3 p.m., including the timeless tales of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,” “Cinderella,” “The Jungle Book,” “101 Dalmatians,” “Robin Hood,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “The Great Mouse Detective,” and “Toy Story.”
A new film series, “Celebrate the Trilogy” will debut in August 2017 to fete some of the most famous cinematic trilogies: “Lord of the Rings,” “Indiana Jones,” and “Alien.”
The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force will present the documentary “He Has Seen War,” co-produced by Donald Miller, Ph.D. and Tom Hanks. The film surveys surviving veterans of Easy Company and 1st Marine Division, whose stories are told in “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.”

LUCAS THEATRE FOR THE ARTS
The Lucas Theatre for the Arts was built in 1921 by Arthur Lucas and architect C.K. Howell. Howell designed theaters across the country and Lucas owned more than 20 theaters throughout the South, though Lucas Theatre in Savannah is the only one to bear his name. Beautifully restored, this grand 86,000-square-foot theatre sits majestically at the corner of Abercorn and Congress Streets on Reynolds Square. From an Italian Renaissance exterior to the ornate Italianate interior, the 1,237-seat Lucas Theatre abounds with impressive architectural features, including a 40-foot-wide ceiling dome, as well as state-of-the-art technology with4K Digital Cinema Projection and Dolby Digital Surround Sound. For nearly 15 years, SCAD has sustained and championed the Lucas Theatre as an important cultural asset in the Savannah community.
