As economic engines and global gateways for commerce, the ports in Savannah and Brunswick are essential to maintaining Georgia’s unprecedented, decade-long status as the No. 1 state for business. Job creators consistently cite the Peach State’s world-class infrastructure as a key reason the state has held this title, and the Georgia Ports Authority is making strategic moves to keep it that way.

Recent enhancements to serve larger ships, increase terminal space, and provide the nation’s largest on-dock railyard help ensure world-class service. The Port of Savannah is one of the nation’s best-connected ports, with 35 weekly ocean carrier calls, rail service from CSX and Norfolk Southern, and direct interstate access. Inland connectivity is a GPA growth strategy, with 75% of the U.S. population within a 3- to 4-day rail trip from Savannah. GPA will focus on a mid-American arc from Dallas to Chicago and Cincinnati, as well as other cities within a 200-mile radius of Savannah such as Charlotte, Rocky Mount, N.C., Tampa, Orlando and Miami. At the Port of Brunswick, expanding infrastructure and fast-growing trade have the facility poised to become the busiest autoport in the U.S. The port features four on-site auto processors, room for customers to grow their business and direct access to Interstate 95. With on-dock rail, Brunswick offers the fastest East Coast connections to Atlanta, Memphis, Huntsville, New Orleans and Dallas. GPA’s central mission is to foster growth using a two-pillar strategy, with the Port of Brunswick handling all future Roll-on/Roll-off cargo while the Port of Savannah concentrates on containerized trade. Georgia Ports’ statewide economic impact includes $140 billion in annual sales by port-supported industries, and $33 billion in personal income each year. GPA employs 1,800 people, while port activity supports 560,000 full- and part-time jobs statewide.
