Food, Film & Famous Dining Revolution
Savannah's Culinary Evolution: A Decade of Transformation and Vibrancy in Dining
In nearly two decades, the dining scene in this region has skyrocketed from 55 in 2005 to a whopping 500 in 2023. This culinary renaissance has firmly established its presence on the global foodie map.
“When I arrived in Savannah in 2005, dining choices were scarce. Pino Venetico’s El Pasticcio and Brian Curry’s Jazz’d tapas bar stood out, but about 10 years later, the restaurant scene exploded, with venues offering not just food but entire dining experiences. They wove together fantastic interior design, creative menus, craft drinks, and renowned chefs like Hugh Acheson. Suddenly, Savannah had numerous reasons to visit downtown. This photograph (left), part of our Film, Food, and Famous Folks issue, exemplifies what makes South magazine unique. It united creative minds to deliver a magazine brimming with diverse ideas, all tied together by a common thread. Attic Fire’s John, Jeremiah, and Eric were regular contributors, and I eagerly awaited our brainstorming sessions to brew up the next big idea. I was always impressed by their talent, especially their knack for incorporating layered elements in their best work, blending objects, architecture, and personalities. This image holds a special place in our hearts, capturing the late ‘Hollywood’ Ron Higgins, a colorful Savannah character, and Chris Miller, the founder of the Creative Coast, whom I met monthly over coffee for idea-packed sessions. Savannah attracts a unique and exceptional talent – there’s something truly special about this city.”– Michael Brooks (Publisher & Creator, South magazine)
