Family-Fun 4th of July Festivities You Can't Miss

Help celebrate America's 420th birthday with these fun local events the whole family will enjoy.

Independence Day ignites in Americans everywhere a patriotic fervor like nothing else can. Since the Fourth of July falls on a Monday this year, people are gearing up for a long weekend full of festivities that bleed red, white and blue.  Here, South magazine provides the ultimate list of family-fun activities going on in Savannah to keep you enthusiastic all weekend long. 

Fireworks

No matter how old you are, fireworks always seem magical as they light up the sky. So pack a picnic, get your favorite camp chair and be sure to check out one of these spectacular fireworks shows.

RICHMOND HILL'S RED, WHITE AND BLUE CELEBRATION

  • Fireworks will begin at 9
  • When: Saturday, July 2nd
  • Where: J.F. Gregory Park, 521 Cedar Street
  • Bring your coolers, lounge chairs, towels and blankets for an evening of fun

RIVER STREET FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION

  • Fireworks start at 9:30!
  • When: July 4th
  • Where: Rousakis Riverfront Plaza, 115 East River Street 
  • Chairs and blankets are welcome. Make sure to get there early to grab a good spot along the riverfront. 

INDEPENDENCE DAY FIREWORKS ON TYBEE ISLAND

  • Fireworks start at 9:15!
  • When: July 4th
  • Where: The fireworks will be staged on the pier, but can be easily viewed from anywhere on the Eastern beaches
  • 4th of July is one of Tybee's busiest days, so come early and stay late to make a whole day of it. Be prepared for heavy traffic on the way out. 

FIREWORKS RIVERBOAT CRUISE

  • The fireworks are the same ones as the River Street Celebration
  • When: July 4th
  • A cruise gives you a one-of-a-kind fireworks experience
  • Choose between 4th of July Fireworks Cruise (9:00 pm), Fireworks and Dinner Cruise (7:00) or Elite Captain's Suite Cruise (5:45)

HILTON HEAD ISLAND FOURTH OF JULY FIREWORKS SHOW

  • Fireworks will start around 9:15!
  • When: July 4th
  • Where: Harbour Town
  • There is a $6.00 gate fee to enter the resort (unless you are a resident or guest staying on the resort) and a free shuttle service will be offered between Harbour Town and various parking lots in the Sea Pines Resort

Celebrations & Festivals

What better way to celebrate the birthday of America than with big parades and local festivals. With entertainment, music, food, activities, vendors and crafts, there's enough fun for the whole family. 

RICHMOND HILL'S RED, WHITE AND BLUE INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

  • When: Saturday, July 2nd 
  • Time: 5- 9:30 p.m.
  • Where: J.F. Gregory Park, 521 Cedar Street
  • What: This free, family-friendly event features music from Cody James & Highway 55, an animal demonstration from Trapper Jack, arts and craft vendors, inflatable water slides, farmers' market, family fishing and fireworks. Food and beverage will be available for purchase

A FAMILY FOURTH AT TRICENTENNIAL PARK – COASTAL HERITAGE SOCIETY

  • When: Saturday, July 2nd – July 4th
  • Time: 10 a.m. – 4p.m.
  • Where: Tricentennial Park, as well as, Savannah History Museum and Savannah Children's Museum
  • What: Costumed interpreters at Savannah History Museum will be debuting new American Revolution-themed programming, complete with visitor battle reenactments, musket firing demonstrations and live music with special guest, Three Fold Chord. Savannah Children's Museum will bring 18th century children's games and activities, including an area to sign the Declaration of Independence with a quill pen. Children will also be able to create 4th of July-themed crafts.

RIVER STREET FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION

  • When: July 4th
  • Time: 4 p.m. – 10 p.m.
  • Where: Rousakis Riverfront Plaza, 115 East River Street 
  • What: Enjoy live entertainment from local favorites, the Hypnotics, or bring the family to hang out in the kids zone. Fireworks display will start at 9:30 p.m.

FORT MCALLISTER FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION

  • When: Saturday, July 2nd 
  • Time: 4 p.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Where: Fort McAllister,3894 Fort McAllister Road, Richmond Hill 
  • What: Living history programs including demonstrations of Civil War drills and rifle and cannon firings. Visitors can participate in old fashioned games including sack races, an egg toss, wheel barrow races and a Civil War-era baseball game.

CITY OF BRUNSWICK OLD FASHION FOURTH OF JULY

  • When: July 4th
  • Time: Begins at 7 p.m.
  • Where: Mary Ross Waterfront Park, Glouster and Bay Streets 
  • What: Free watermelon, music, and old-fashioned games like sack races, water balloon tossing, and hula hoop contests, along with fun prizes
  • Voted number one spot in USA Today's 10 Best Reader's Choice Award Contest for "Best Fourth of July Celebrations in the Country."

Are you looking for something a little different when it comes to celebrating your Independence Day? Check out some of these events to add to your list of a fun weekend.

RED, WHITE AND BREWS – INDEPENDENCE DAY PUB CRAWL

  • When: Saturday, July 2
  • Time: 4 p.m. -10 p.m.
  • Where: Begins at Barrelhouse South and ends at Ampersand
  • What: Come celebrate America's birthday in all of downtown Savannah's most popular bars. After you get a scorecard, visit all the bars to receive drink specials and other free stuff, such as koozies and t-shirts. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to a local charity. You must be 21+ to participate.
