It is a period of great anticipation.  Following years of sub-par prequels, the STAR WARS franchise has returned to glory with two outstanding films, The Force Awakens and Rogue One, leaving hopes high for the upcoming The Last Jedi.

As the hours tick by until that midnight showing, we have invited members of the famed 501St Legion’s Georgia Garrison for a shoot highlighting the latest in imperial fashion.

“I love costuming. I studied art, and this was just something I really wanted to do,” said the Savannah 501st’s resident Wookiee, CC-TK-3058, known to her friends as Gayle Kicklighter (which, for her real name, still sounds like an awesome Star Wars name). “I’ve always loved ‘Star Wars;’ it’s always been one of those movies you can watch over and over again… And since I’m a sci-fi nerd and a costume nerd, it’s one of those things that went together.”

The 501st, formed in 1997, began as a group of fans in home-brewed stormtrooper armor who started doing charity work. Upon receiving blessings from LUCASFILM, the group spread across the planet, reaching a membership somewhere around 11,000. There are 190 members in Georgia – 26 in Savannah.

In between conventions, the group comes out for non-profit organizations like Coastal Pet Rescue, staging photo ops to raise money. “We don’t charge anything; we’re 100 percent non-profit” said Kicklighter. “It’s our costume and our time. We just enjoy doing it.”

Strong with the light side of the Force, these cosplayers are.

Test your knowledge of the force:

Learned in the ways of The Force, are you? Knowledge of the nerdiest corners of George Lucas’ magnum opus, you have? See we will what…. You know what, that Yoda talk is really hard to keep up. Between the prequels, the sequels, the spin-offs, and the OG trilogy, not to mention decades worth of TV shows, video games, comic books, and novels, there is enough Star Wars lore out there to fill the Jedi archives three times over.

So how well do you know your way around a galaxy far far away? Take our test and prove it, you must.
