Embrace the Mud this #AdvenureWednesday and Plan Your Adrenaline Packed Mud-Therapy Session

Mud therapy is how Greg Howze describes The Big Nasty, his 1,600-acre ATV and motocross park in Bloomingdale, Ga., roughly a 30-minute drive west of Savannah.

For ATV riders—and, yes, you have to bring your own as there are no rentals available—it’s the chance to navigate trails, make friends and get muddy. “What we do here is very social,” says Howze. “It’s as much about the camaraderie as it is about riding.”

“It’s as much about the camaraderie as it is about riding.”

Big groups meet up to explore the trails together, and bail one another out when someone gets stuck. Motocross riders have their choice of two tracks, catering to different experience levels, as well as a kids’ track.

On most nights, the park closes at 5:30 p.m., but once a month, Howze organizes what’s called a camping weekend where guests can stay Friday through Sunday afternoon. RV and primitive camping are available onsite, as well as hot showers.

This summer season, Howze is expanding his nightly entertainment, bringing in bigger, better-known acts at the music barn, a larger stage to accommodate bands. If you need one more reason to come out and spend the weekend, know that the park is also home to a swimming hole outfitted with a rope swing and a massive slip-and-slide.

“What maybe surprises people is that we have doctors, we have lawyers, we have pilots, we have all kinds of people who come out and ride,” says Howze. “But what they all have in common is that, out here, everyone gets to experience the outdoors as a kid again—as a big, adult kid.”
