“Have you ever wondered why medicine doesn’t work like FEDEX or Amazon? You can track a pair of sneakers on Amazon as it travels to your door, but not track a breast biopsy that could be critical to your health? This bothered me. I believe a patient should know where in the cycle their test results are.” Dr. Sidney P. Smith
APPROACH
Patients need an advocate to shepherd them through their healthcare journey. We have access to the latest advances in dermatology and we love taking care of patients. They are the reason we show up each day. Each patient is unique with their own set of special moments that they wish to share with us.
WHEN AND WHY
During my Vanderbilt residency, I remember a challenging case of a patient where the dermatologist on call examined the patient and diagnosed a rare condition. The doctor was able to ascertain this because he questioned the patient about his schedule and activities, really listened to the answers and realized the patient stood out in the sun on Sundays, subsequently suffering the symptoms. After that day, I chose dermatology as my field.
OUTSTANDING MOMENT
The day my first patient walked through the door.
OUTSTANDING PERSON
Ronny Harris, M.D., is a retired internist from Jesup, Georgia. He was the smartest doctor I know, able to diagnose the condition of a patient who had previously been to several other physicians. Those “old dog” physicians are few and far between now, and I consider myself lucky to have learned from him.
OUTSTANDING ORGANIZATIONS
10 years ago, Dr. Smith’s family purchased the former Cohen’s Old Man’s Retreat property to create a unique destination for the Savannah community to enjoy. The Savannah Blarney Stone resides at the property, an actual piece of the Blarney Castle from Ireland. 100% of the funds raised go directly back to 10 local charities. Plans are also underway to plant 2,000 Royal Velvet camellias from Lake Mayer to DeRenne Ave., along the Truman bike path, and sponsor a southside parade in 2023 for charity as the camellias are in bloom.
OUTSTANDING TECHNOLOGY
Have you ever asked why you can track a package on Amazon, but not track a breast biopsy that could be critical to your health? This bothered me. I believe a patient should know where in the cycle their test results are. A new concept, called Pathology Tracker has been created and is patent-pending. Our tracker is now in select national labs with more to follow. This will change the future of medicine and allow patients to have more control of their medical care and experience.
COVID-19 CHALLENGES
We masked up and kept rolling because our patients needed us.
