Guess what? We’re letting you in on our biggest secret.
January through March in Jackson County is THE time to visit—when the crowds thin out and you have the mountains to yourself. It’s a time when the air is crisp, clean and cool. Whether you’re looking for some high-adventure outdoor activities, unique shopping experiences, or delicious farm-to-table meals and craft brews, we’ve got you covered.
Get outside and take in the fresh mountain air and unobstructed views. Check out iconic Whiteside Mountain, with sheer rock cliffs that are among the highest in the eastern United States. Hike Black Balsam Trail, a gorgeous route with treeless mountaintops at 6,000 feet, offering incredible views and opportunities for sunset selfies.
Looking for a little R&R? We hear you. Soak in the serenity of the mountains at one of our popular spas, like Cashiers Spa, Mandara Spa in Cherokee, or Canyon Spa at Lonesome Valley. Or immerse yourself in the healing power of nature, and try a relaxing walk through Pinnacle Park in Sylva, the state’s first and only Certified Forest Therapy Trail.

The Pinnacle Park trail forms a loop of approximately half a mile and is surrounded by the gently flowing water of Fisher Creek. A tranquil forest setting with wildflowers, songbirds and rhododendrons, it is only ten minutes from downtown Sylva but feels miles away from everything. The loop trail connects with other trails that lead to magnificent views of the mountains for those who want to extend their adventure after a forest bathing experience. Photos / Nick Breedlove
Got an artist in the group? WCU Fine Arts Museum is open year round and features four galleries, a growing permanent collection, and rotating exhibitions that highlight regional and international artists. Jackson County also hosts several unique arts and crafts fairs and festivals.
Hop on the Ale Trail and experience the flavors of Sylva’s thriving brewery scene. Along the way, there are great restaurants, antique shops, and more.
Perhaps the best part about Secret Season? It boasts the lowest lodging rates of the year. So when you’re here, you get more mountains for your money. Sounds ideal, right? We think so.
