A Trip To Historic St. Augustine

St. Augustine, Florida is the perfect trip if you are looking for a town full of sight-seeing potential.

St. Augustine is known for its history with the Spanish as well as the beaches! The fort there, Castillo de San Marcos, was created by the Spanish in the 17th century to protect the city from the British. It is the oldest fort in America. Tours are available every day except Christmas from 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. If you are traveling to St. Augustine in the summer months, be prepared for a little bit of a wait. According to the fort’s website, visitation is lowest from September to November and highest from June to Labor Day. It also hosts special events and reenactments featuring actors shooting cannons from the top battlements.

As with most towns in Florida, salty beaches await you in St. Augustine along with a couple of lighthouses that are a great afternoon sight to see. After hitting the beach for some tanning and swimming, or taking a tour of Castillo de San Marcos, head downtown!

Downtown St. Augustine provides hours of entertainment. You can grab a bite to eat or do some shopping. There are homemade candy and taffy shops, beachwear stores and lively taverns. Street performers are also known to line the walkways. The fort and downtown are within walking distance of each other. All you have to do is find a parking spot. Carriage rides are also offered, taking you through the winding streets of historic St. Augustine. Most carriage rides last around 30 minutes. They are perfect for a romantic night or an interesting family outing.
