South Magazine: Place of the South
Ah, The Place of South! The crown jewel of my magazine publishing empire. I firmly believed that our little South magazine needed to be right smack dab in the middle of this enchanting Southern gem, and I couldn’t have planned it any better if I’d tried.
You see, we staked our claim here in November of 2005, and by January, we were strolling down a red carpet celebrating the release of our very first issue at the magnificent Savannah Station. That was nearly 18 years ago, and boy, have we crammed a lot into that run! From strings of all-nighters (yes, I’m currently riding one) to black-tie release parties, networking events but mostly having the opportunity to meet and tell the stories of the South’s most interesting folks, and of the coolest venues in the entire South – we’ve done it all. There’s something undeniably special about this region, and we’re incredibly fortunate to be located in our little big city, filled with some of the most down-to-earth, flat-out nicest folks on this Earth. And the great thing is I get to see these types of people every day walking down to the coffee shop for an afternoon espresso. Now, let me tell you about our office. The stairs… those stairs – they’re steep enough to provide a workout but not so daunting that we need a Sherpa guide to navigate them. The offices themselves are the very definition of “historic” in every sense of the word, and we cherish every creaky floorboard and vintage window frame. We’ve witnessed the transformation of downtown Savannah over the past ten years, and it’s been nothing short of miraculous. The resurgence of this place is like watching a phoenix rise from the ashes. The streets have come alive with vibrant businesses, restaurants, and shops. The city is thriving, and we’ve had the privilege of having a front row seat to the entire show. And now, as I sit here on yet another caffeine-fueled all-nighter, I can’t help but smile. Our little office in historic downtown Savannah, Georgia, may be steeped in history, but it’s also the backdrop to countless new beginnings. So, here’s to the Place of South, the city we call home, and the incredible journey we’ve shared. Here’s to many more years of stories, laughter, and unforgettable memories in this corner of the South.
