20 Adrenaline-Packed Ways to Play in the South – Part 3

1. Roller derby
Women all over the country are lacing up their roller skates, taking on personas with clever pun-based nicknames, and wearing bruises like badges thanks to the resurgence of roller derby. Roller derby is all the rage and one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S., and the Savannah Derby Devils have been jamming and blocking since 2006. The team’s popularity has grown immensely in the dozen years since, to the point that making the roster is extremely competitive. But that doesn’t mean beginners to the sport can’t get involved. Newcomers can develop their skills by joining the local “wRECk league” for $70 per semester for a fun, low-pressure, low-impact recreational derby experience, or attend a one-off class for just $12 per class to give prospective skaters a chance to try it out. The Derby Devils also offer a boot camp in July to immerse yourself into the sport or prepare for tryouts held three times a year in hopes of cracking the official roster for Women’s Flat Track Derby Association matches. Younger skaters can take up the sport, too, thanks to the Savannah Jr. Derbytaunts for girls ages 8-17. 2. Get muddy
Unless they own a big swath of land or know someone who does, it can be difficult for dirt bike or ATV owners to find a place to open up the throttle. Enter Big Nasty ATV Park in Bloomingdale, Georgia. You can bring your own bike to race on their two motocross tracks, get your ATV muddy on 20 miles of 4×4 trails, or even play paintball or fly a drone. They don’t do rentals, though, so if you want to join the fun, you’ll have to have your own ride. 3. Scary movie at Highway 21 Drive-In
A thriller or horror flick always gets the blood pumping, but there’s something about watching a scary movie at the drive-in that takes the rush to another level. Unfortunately there aren’t many drive-in theaters left, but one of them happens to be the Highway 21 Drive-In in Beaufort, South Carolina, where everything but the movies they show feels like a throwback to a bygone era. So the next time there’s a scary movie you want to see on the big screen, skip the multiplex and opt for cheaper concessions and the spooky notion that the killer might be lurking just outside your car door. .
4. Parasailing
Don’t be fooled by the giant skull and bones logo on the Sky Pirate Parasail and Watersports parachute – parasailing is one of the safest ways to get a serious adrenaline rush. You’ll soar 500 feet above Calibogue Sound with a breath-taking view of the Lowcountry coast from the Marine Corps Training Depot at Parris Island to Tybee Island.
