Greatest Kids 2019

Published:

This year’s greatest kids spent the day at Oatland Island Wildlife Center and Bogey’s mini golf while they told us about their silliest stories, favorite foods, and hidden talents.

Shelby Lynn Davis-Kinard / Age: 6 years / Mom: Crystal Davis-Kinard

They say cursive is on its way out, but they would be wrong. I learned how to write in cursive, and it is the only civilized way to go. I also love books, especially ones about dinosaurs. I may be a bit of a traditionalist in that respect, but I’m up on the latest technology, too. I’m always showing my Mamaw how to use her iPad. When I’m not reviving the lost art of cursive, I enjoy music, art, singing, climbing, exploring and going on adventures in the mountains. Oh, and I love a good bowl of Mamaw’s mac ‘n’ cheese.

Daniel Clark / Age: 4 years / Parents: Brandon Clark & Catherine Selgren

People just don’t understand superheroes like I do. Can you believe my dad thought Aquaman was called “Aco-man” like “Taco-man”? Unacceptable. He said my grandpa must have taught him that. Well, you better believe I called my grandpa up and let him know how wrong he was! My favorite superheroes are Spiderman and Red Power Ranger. I dress up like them all the time. When I’m not correcting blatant misnomers of world-saving superheroes, I like to go to the Get Air Trampoline Park and practice my moves. You can’t scale a building if you don’t start training young.

Ari & Yosef Friedman / Age: 4 months / Mom: Kimberley Friedman

If you want to get a hold of us, you’ll have to speak to our agent. That’s our mom. We’re so booked starring in TV shows and movies, we just don’t know if we can pencil you in. Our older twin brothers got us started in the biz. They acted in Lady and the Tramp and The Glorias. We did a collab with them on Full Circle, a SCAD film. That was around the time we all got really into method acting. I mean even now, we’re just coming off a gig modeling for Grecco’s jogger strollers, and it’s like we’re still in character. Catch you on the flip, dudes.

Visit the farm at Oatland Island Wildlife Center

Cows say “moo” and turkeys say “gobble gobble,” but the actual sounds they make aren’t quite that articulate. Take the family to the farm at Oatland Island Wildlife Center to hear what a real “moo” sounds like straight from the source.

711 Sandtown Rd., Savannah, GA 31410 / 912.395.1212

Hailey Evans / Age: 5 / Mom: Deborah Evans

People have called me a fashionista, and I’m not mad about it. I love shopping with my mom at Palm Avenue downtown. We get matching outfits (Lilly Pulitzer, obviously) and wear them to church every Sunday. I love a good pattern, especially if it has purple in it – my favorite color. I once asked an associate at the Palm Avenue store why she wasn’t wearing Lilly. Apparently, Lilly makes solid-colored dresses, too. Who knew?

Luciana Jude Edenfield / Age: 9 months / Mom: Maggie Edenfield

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times: Kenny Chesney is a musical genius. I mean, “Summertime”? Come on! Pure, unadulterated joy. I love his videos. They are seriously all I watch. I mean, I love all music, but I’m a Kenny Chesney superfan. I also like bananas, Cheetos, ice cream and meeting new people. Everyone I meet is a potential convert to the No Shoes Nation, after all. That’s Kenny’s fan club. I’m the unofficial President.

Toddler Tuesdays at Oatland Island

Every Tuesday from 10-10:45 a.m. and 11-11:45 a.m., Oatland Island runs Toddler Tuesdays to show little adventurers the magic of the great, big, natural world around them at the Center. Featuring themed activities like songs, story time and nature walks, Toddler Tuesdays offers a safe and engaging way to interact with nature in a guided environment.

Benjamin & Lincoln Fitchitt / Age: 3 / Parents: Pamela & David Fitchitt

Not many people know this about us, but we are expert dinosaur callers. Lincoln does a mean Brontosaurus. I’m more of a T-Rex guy. It’s kind of our thing. That and battling dragons in epic sword fights. We work well as a dragon-fighting team, but we have our differences, too. Lincoln loves his sweets; I’m more of a savory guy. Give me pickle chips any day. When we’re not slaying fire-breathing monsters, we like to tend our vegetable garden and help Daddy with the tractor on our farm.

Easton Collins / Age: 2 years / Parents: Brandon & Brooke Collins

There’s nothing better than cracking open a cold bottle of milk and watching a game with the crew, a.k.a. Mom, Dad and Allie, our Yorkie. My teams? Bama. Roll Tide! And the Atlanta Braves, if it’s baseball season. I pick up a bat now and then, too. I just like being outside – the smell of the grass, the sun on your face, and the sound of a homerun cracking off a Louisville Slugger. Follow it up with a dip in the pool? That’s a good day.

Putt a Birdie At Bogey’s

Take the family to Bogey’s Sports Bar and Mini Golf for a day of friendly competition. Teach them the sweet satisfaction of putting a hole in one and the perfect swing technique. Stay for ice cream in the arcade or dinner in the Sports Bar. bogeysbar.com

Izzy Banegas / Age 2 / Parents Frank & Jinsey Banegas

You could say I’m a young Julia Child. I love to cook and bake for my mom and dad. The food I cook in my mini kitchen is only rivaled by my Dad’s mashed potatoes – they’re my favorite. His rice is pretty good, too. If I don’t become a chef when I grow up, I want to be Spiderman. That’s my favorite movie. I would make my costume pink, though; it’s my favorite color.

Abrielle & Ava Wright / Age: 4 and 2 / Parents: Jamonte & Toni Wright

We are the best of friends. We do everything together – going to ballet class, playing outside with our cousins, eating at Chuck E. Cheese, engaging with our fans on Instagram. But make no mistake, we have our differences. For example, Ava’s favorite color is blue, but mine is pink. That’s a big one. Yeah, and Abrielle was Vampirina for Halloween, and I was a ladybug. We always bond over the important stuff, though, like Boss Baby, Peppa Pig, and ice cream.

Scarlett Mae Colson / Age: 3 / Mom: Hannah Colson

When my little sister gets here (I knew she was going to be a girl before Mommy did), we are going to be princesses. I will be Elsa from Frozen, and she can be Ariel (she doesn’t know this yet, but I’ve been preparing). They are my two favorite princesses. We will visit the pineapple fountain in Charleston and search for seashells on the beach. I love the beach so much; my mom told me my birthstone should be a seashell. I hope my sister’s is, too!

Bogey’s Bumper Cars

Buckle up and get ready to blast off in Bogey’s Sports Bar and Mini Golf Bumper Cars. Height and weight restrictions apply, but younger kids can cheer from the sidelines while bro and sis bounce mom and dad right out of their seats. bogeysbar.com

Scenes of the South

FACES OF THE SOUTH-THE TRILOGY GALLERY 5

This is not a celebration. It is not a salute. This, readers, is a manifesto. It is a bold declaration of the richness of the South, of the majestic talents, relentless ambition and singular vision that reside just behind each face you pass in your travels. These are the faces of the people who are creating the new South through the sweat of their brow and the depth of their passions. But if you never look closer you may never know how deep that passion goes, and what it has accomplished.
