Roadtrip Survival Kit

Forget the flashlights, these are the true necessities for the ultimate Southern road trip.

One of the most important components for a Southern traveler is a trusty cooler where they can store all the goodies that make a trip down south unique, memorable and tasty. It is the perfect way to keep sodas and sweet tea ice cold on a hot Southern day. Bison coolers hail from the Lone Star State and have the perfect soft cooler to hold all your necessities.

Boiled peanuts

A staple of the South, boiled peanuts can be found at homemade stands dotting the roadsides of Southern highways. Boiling peanuts dates back to the 1800s and has become a favorite among Southerners — they’re even recognized as the official snack food of South Carolina. Pick up a bag at Davis Produce on your way out to Tybee Island.

Founded in Atlanta in the 19th century, Coca-Cola has become an American icon and a treasure among Southerners. The jolt of caffeine is perfect for a “pick me up” on the road. Additionally, Cheerwine is another Southern favorite. Established in North Carolina during a sugar shortage, Cheerwine has a distinct wild cherry flavor thay is sure to cheer up up any tastebuds, and has even been a favorite among some U.S. presidents. Another rising local favorite is Cannonborough Craft Soda from Charleston, which mixes uniquely delicious flavor combinations like Strawberry Jalapeno and Honey Basil for the more adventurous Southerner.,,

Fill a thermos with a cup of Black Rifle Coffee, the veteran owned and operated company that’s sure to add a bit of pep to your step. Once you get to Savannah, check out some local coffee roasts from PERC Savannah, perfect for keeping you rejuvinated on and off the road. Add a bit of sweetness with a dash of Tupelo honey from the Savannah Bee Company, which has quickly become a favorite in the Lowcountry.,

The South is rich in literature highlighting the Lowcountry, best found in Pat Conroy’s riveting tale “The Water is Wide,” in which he becomes a shcoolteacher for the predominately African-American children of Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. Another classic is “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” by John Berendt, which brought fame to historic Savannah. Both are available on

Sweet Tea

Almost any Southern household will have a pitcher full of iced tea waiting in their fridge. It has been a staple beverage for decades because of its simplistic nature and refreshing flavor after coming out of the famed Southern heat. For an added summer flare of flavor, brew some Peach iced tea from the Savannah Tea Room for a taste of the Georgia coast.

Potato Chips

Chips are always a great snack on the road with their satisfying crunch. Potato chips are greatly popular across the Southern states and a few flavors from the south have made it into the bags of potato chip companies. Hailing from Charleston, South Carolina, Lowcountry Kettle Company offers fun flavors like Bloody Mary and Fried Pickle potato chips that are perfect for a snack along the coastal highways of the South.

Ice Pops

In the Southern summer heat, an icey treat is a key element to chill out. Specialty ice pops have risen in popularity over years along the coast, and Savannah Square Pops have quickly established themselves as a Lowcountry favorite with their playful and delectable flavor combinations named after each of Savannah’s 22 squares. The blackberry lemonade Calhoun Square Pop is sure to refresh the taste buds, while the Pulaski Sqaure Pop — a salted caramel base dipped in decadent chocalate and rolled in salty pretzels — is the perfect choice for a sweet tooth.
