The Top Shops in Savannah's Downtown Design District

They say shopping is therapy, and whomever “they” is, I agree with them very much.

Savannah’s historic downtown district is brimming with lovely shops and stores of all kinds – the bustling boulevard of Broughton Street is lined with stores both chain and local, just waiting to give your credit card some exercise. But the next time you’re out and about in downtown Savannah, step off the well-worn path of Broughton and head south on Whitaker Street for a more elevated shopping experience.

On the corner of Jones and Whitaker is a wonderful little collection of small stores owned by local Savannahnians who know a thing or two about retail therapy.

Start at Archenum, an elegant antique and home store with an eclectic mix of old and new items to furnish your home in a modern yet lived-in way. Spend some time here sifting through the collectibles purchased from estate sales – you will not be disappointed.

Afterwards, mosey on down to One Fish Two Fish, a bright, beautiful home décor shop with some of the most stylish furniture pieces in Savannah, as well as a wide collection of handmade jewelry and pungent (and often pricey) candles. Next door is Circa Lighting, whose contemporary light fixtures add an illuminating punch to any room. If Circa is a smidge out of your price range, visit The Annex across the street – it’s Circa’s sale room that is full of covetable lamps and light fixtures at more palatable prices.

Stock up on handmade wrapping paper and elaborate notecards at La Paperie, a cozy shop dedicated to artisan papers ranging from colorful botanical calendars in thick card stock to traditional wedding invitations, and a bit of everything in between.

Don’t miss Number Four Eleven, a charming, quaint shop with a covetable curation of items for your home and for you. Browse the art by local painters and the chinoiserie-inspired décor pieces that add a traditional yet updated accent to any room.

Consider yourself warned – as with any shopping spree, restraint is always a necessary companion. The temptations from these local spots will undoubtedly laden you down with many a shopping bag. But don’t fret – after all, it is therapy.
