Southern Sugaring: A Sweet Way to Give Back

Published:

South magazine hosted a long-awaited celebration on Monday evening for this phenomenal new 2,000 square foot salon overlooking Chippewa Square.

Jessica has embraced being girly since childhood, as evidenced by her parents' most effective punishment - dressing her in pants instead of dresses. Naturally, her newborn little girl Jameson donned the frilliest (most precious) ensemble of the evening!

With the support of South magazine, #TURNITPINK and the openhanded generosity from local Savannah businesses, the Southern Sugaring girls were able to turn Monday evening into a sweet escape for women fighting breast cancer. In addition to selling raffle tickets for the famous pink Vespa to support breast cancer and reconstructive surgery, Jessica also raffled every girl's dream gift basket (below).

Jessica found a way to turn her grand re-opening into a support system for a fellow beautician, Lindsey Wirht. She is shown here with Jessica holding the incredible gift basket (worth over $1,300!) that will be raffled off at the end of October to support Lindsey's current fight against inflammatory breast cancer

According to Southern Sugaring's Facebook, "Monday night brought in over $300! We're so excited, but we know we can do better. Because we love her, we're extending the opportunity to enter this drawing until the end of October. Since we also still have raffle tickets for the #TURNITPINK Vespa, we're just going to extend all of our contests, including the one for free Brazilians for a year. If you donate at least $10 to either raffle, you'll receive a coupon for half off your first Brazilian!" Read Jessica's blog about why every lady will need a Brazilian this winter.

The gift basket for Lindsey includes donations from: RMC JewelryMamie Ruth I M.Liz Studios and BoutiqueDe Colores Cookies y MasPaprika SouthernPure Barre SavannahThe Scout Guide SavannahRoots Southern SalonTongue In Cheek ChicSouth MagazineAndrea Kinnear Photography+DesignSpa Bleujulesloves.me, and of course Southern Sugaring.

Lindsey Wirht is an expert bridal makeup artist who has been published in Martha Stewart Bridal MagazineInside Weddings, Weddings Unveiled and featured on E! News who is fighting a rare type of breast cancer, known as inflammatory breast cancer.

"Cancer definitely takes so much from us. For most women its our femininity. Before I feel manly, after [I feel] pretty. I am lucky I know how to draw on brows and do my makeup. Not everyone does," said Lindsey Wirht.

One day, Lindsey noticed a seemingly innocent red rash on her breast. When it did not disappear after some time, she eventually decided to go and see about it. Lindsey's world completely changed when, after several screenings, she learned her body was being attacked by cancer. Symptoms of this type of breast cancer could potentially go untreated or unnoticed in the younger women (under 40) that it is most common in: breast warmth, redness, swelling, or the breast may become harder or skin may change consistency.

"I think the reason I love what I do (which, if you think about it, is a super weird thing to say you love), is just because of that – I get to meet wonderful people, get to know them a little too well, and give them a sweeter alternative to something we all know hurts like nobody’s business." said Jessica. Stop by and see her this week to get your raffle tickets!

FACES OF THE SOUTH — THE TRILOGY GALLERY 5

This is not a celebration. It is not a salute. This, readers, is a manifesto. It is a bold declaration of the richness of the South, of the majestic talents, relentless ambition and singular vision that reside just behind each face you pass in your travels. These are the faces of the people who are creating the new South through the sweat of their brow and the depth of their passions. But if you never look closer you may never know how deep that passion goes, and what it has accomplished.
