South's Greatest Kitchens 2019

Award-winning interior designers, Amy and Lukejohn Dickson have worked tirelessly over the past two decades and have positioned themselves as the go-to couple for upscale design. Check out these THREE amazing kitchens created by this dynamic duo.

Spring Island
Owners, Porter & Rain Galloway
Designer: LaSource Home

Having lived overseas in some of the world’s most exotic destinations such as Thailand, France and Singapore, Porter and Rain Galloway set their sights on the Lowcountry coast when it was time to come home to the states 10 years ago – entranced with the beauty of natural elements that dwell in the Southeast’s landscape of the ocean, rivers and marshlands.

Described as “veteran remodelers,” the couple considers their home on the exclusive Spring Island to be their first project that isn’t just a renovation, but a transformation.

Five years in the making, this state-of-the-art kitchen combines outdoor elements with world-class design; it’s a unique pairing of the rawness of nature and the sophistication of modern appliances which creates a space unlike any other.

With a passion for cooking and entertaining, the couple desired an open concept.

“We wanted to create a welcoming feeling and place for people to enjoy,” Rain says.

Shown above: Galley 5’ Workstation shown in a back-to-back configuration for maximum functionality, Commercial style faucet with 360-degree articulating 18” spout, Pop-Up Power with USB power outlets, Handmade Ceramic jars by Plantation Interiors, Miele dominates the appliance industry with this 6 in 1 range: Cooktop, griddle, convention oven, microwave, speed oven, and warming drawer, Custom pantry storage conceals beverage station with Miele Coffee MakerCustom stainless steel range hood designed and built by LaSOURCE and Concealed Fridge & Freezer in the back kitchen in custom cabinetry.

The kitchen features dual 5-foot Galley Workstations that allow the two cooks to handle all tasks—preparation, serving, and clean-up—from a single, central spot, whether working side by side or separately. Kitchen designers Lukejohn and Amy Dickson of LaSource Home say the back-to-back configuration provides a “completely different dynamic” than more typical layouts—and is a perfect fit for the couple’s cooking and entertaining style.

Complete with German Miele appliances, custom American-made cabinets, flooring from local reclaimed wood, paint from Farrow and Ball along with accessories provided by Plantation Interiors - this kitchen was thoughtfully designed to flow with the natural environment that surrounds it. It’s hard to determine where the living space ends and the kitchen begins. Defined as a lifestyle kitchen - it creates a place for Porter and Rain to engage, entertain and be inspired by the elements.

Home of Jack & Leslie Trenta
Location: Bluffton, SC

Designers: Leslie Trenta & Lukejohn Dickson

A collaborative effort between interior designer Leslie Trenta and kitchen designer Lukejohn Dickson, resulted in this traditional kitchen located in Old Town Bluffton’s Historic District. It is as playful as it is polished.

With whimsical layers of colors and textures inspired by the landscape of the Lowcountry, the owners, Leslie & Jack Trenta, have imaginatively created a kitchen that reflects many elements of the Lowcountry vernacular.

Leslie, leading in the design, shows she isn’t afraid of using color as she has carefully curated artwork and accessories to make the space feel even richer. The goal for the interior spaces throughout the newly constructed Guilford Place Cottages of Stock Farm, was to have a home feel lived in and timeless, borrowing elements of historic architectural details that make the home unique.

Made complete by a state-of-the-art La Cornue range as the centerpiece, and with a dog-friendly scullery (built with their beloved Brittany Spaniel, Sam, in mind), this fun kitchen is cozy and practical and perfectly equipped to entertain guests.

“Jack and I wanted a space that worked well with our lifestyle, while adding my own spin on timeless design that reflects the Lowcountry spirit,” says Leslie. “Everything is functional and detailed-oriented, but also very comfortable.  It’s our little Lowcountry cottage”

Home of Mike & Ann McLaughlin
Location: Savannah
Designers: Amy & Lukejohn Dickson

Nine years after Ann and Mike McLaughlin moved into their 1965 custom built home near the Savannah Yacht Club, they decided it was time to put a fresh spin on the original kitchen layout. With the help of designers Lukejohn and Amy Dickson of LaSource Home, they were able to curate a blend of authentic materials that create a space described as “Lowcountry chic.”

Using 2,000+-year-old sinker cypress pulled from beneath the Ogeechee River for ceiling beams and pillars, the duo opened up their kitchen so that it would be the focal point of this charming home. Crisp white quartz counter tops with waterfall edges create a simple look – designed to not take away from the bold texture of the wood.

“The original galley kitchen was a real challenge because of a load bearing wall. Luckily we were able to get creative with the local pecky cypress beams,” says Mike.

“We wanted a simple, clean, coastal design and opening up the kitchen really changed the feel of the entire house.”

Adorned throughout this charming custom home is an impressive collection of Ann’s eclectic artwork.

Inquires or commissions:

Both former University of Alabama athletes (football & swimming) the two southerners have beautifully captured the essence of the Lowcountry in their newly renovated home.

With inviting views of their backyard, their sleek and stylish kitchen is a comfortable gathering place for the family of four and their beloved Labrador Retriever named Tide.
