While many dream of being an actor, this former lawyer took matters into his own hands and approached it from a business perspective. Just a few short years later, he has found the road to success.

1. What is it like being a professional actor and living in Savannah?

Mark: I love it.  I get to enjoy the laid back, friendly lifestyle of Savannah yet still do the career that I love. I find it is easier to live a balanced life in Savannah.

I get to enjoy the laid back, friendly lifestyle of Savannah yet still do the career that I love. I find it is easier to live a balanced life in Savannah.

2.  What does a typical day look like for you when you are not out of town working on a film or TV show?

Mark: My job is to do auditions.  Booking a film or TV show and going to set is like vacation for me.

3.  Do you have to do a lot of traveling for your work?

Mark: Although I sometimes get to work on a project filming in Savannah, I usually have to travel for work.  I most often work in Atlanta and Los Angeles, but I have filmed in Ukraine, Colombia, (and more.)

4.  You are known for playing intense, menacing characters that are often villains.  How do you prepare for these roles?

Mark: I never approach a character by labeling him as a villain. I find the character’s internal justification for the actions he takes. It is others who define those actions as villainous.

5.  You have worked with major stars such as Tom Cruise, Channing Tatum, Nicolas Cage, Gabrielle Union, Jessica Alba, Glenn Close, Amy Adams and Mahershala Ali.  What are some of the similarities and differences between them?

Mark:  One consistent trait I saw in all of those amazing actors is that they always have a sense of fun when they are on set acting. And I never saw any of them make excuses.  They were all utmost professionals.

6. Who was your favorite actor to work with and why?

Mark: Tom Cruise was probably my favorite actor to work with.  I loved his team spirit and his constant drive to make a scene better. He showed me that you can be a top level movie star and still be a thoughtful human being.

7.  What are some of your favorite roles and why?

Mark: I really loved playing Kobi in LA’S Finest opposite Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba.  The character was described as a menacing and evil enforcer for a drug cartel. I got to wear some pretty awesome costumes and ride around in a $300,000 Rolls Royce Ghost.   I also have a soft spot for my first network TV role in the ABC series, Secrets and Lies. I think every actor looks back on their first big break with fondness.

8.  You just finished working with Amy Adams and Glenn Close on Ron Howard’s new Netflix film, HILLBILLY ELEGY.  What was it like working with those guys?

Mark: Ron Howard is one of my all time favorite directors. He is the only director I have ever auditioned for who came from around the table and shook my hand and thanked me for coming.

Glenn Close was one of the few actors I have worked with that I saw transform into another person when the camera rolled.

Amy Adams played a very different character than what she normally plays as well. She was extremely down to earth and super easy to work with.

9. What are you currently working on?

Mark: I’m currently filming a recurring role on the new Netflix series, Sweet Magniolias, which is based on a book series of the same name.  I play a tough, no-nonsense blue collar dad.

10.  Where can we see you on screen next?

Mark: For television I’ll be appearing in the upcoming HBO series, “The Outsider,” based on the Stephen King novel as well as in the OWN series, “Greenleaf.”  In theaters you’ll be able to see me working opposite Will Patton in the horror film,  “Shookum Hills.”  “Hillbilly Elegy” will have a limited theatrical release before it premieres on Netflix.
