Dr. Richard Greco

While the medical community may not have been an “early adopter” of new video technology, Dr. Richard Greco recognized the potential it might have for his and other plastic surgery practices.  Working with a computer technology firm, he helped develop “TouchMD,” a program that allows you to review the patient’s photos on the computer monitor  and morph and demonstrate the results of  various treatment options.  Allowing a visual discussion with the patient to determine the best possible option for that particular patient.  “It’s a much different and better patient experience,” said Dr. Greco.  “It really shows the potential of greater collaboration between the medical and technological worlds.”

As a plastic surgeon for more than three decades, Dr. Richard Greco has had heart-warming success with many patients.  He has helped breast cancer survivors with reconstructive surgery and given hundreds of male and female patients new confidence and self-assurance in their appearance.  But he knew there was more he could do.  Active in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (where he’s on track to become president) and the Royal and Ancient Society of Plastic Surgeons, he helped raise awareness of the profession and encourage research, ethics and high standards in the profession.

Working with other doctors in Savannah he helped lead the “Turn it Pink” initiative, which in October set up a dozen exercise and sports-related activities to raise awareness regarding breast cancer and options for breast reconstruction.  But Dr. Greco knew there was another important role he could play.

“Ever since I was very young, I’ve known I’ve had an ability to bring people together,” Dr. Greco said. In high school he recruited other students and set up a lawn care service.  He helped his brother bring together all the elements needed to establish and operate a highly successful “under 21” night club. The term may not have been familiar to him as a teenager, but at an early age Dr. Greco was what the business world calls a “change agent,” someone who can act as a catalyst for new initiatives and move organizations in different directions.

Change agents are impatient with the status quo and proactive about trying new “out of the box” ideas and concepts. They have infectious enthusiasm and the ability to motivate others who might be skeptical about new approaches.

This kind of thinking led Dr. Greco to collaborate with medical technology businesses to develop new breast implants and improve breast reconstruction technology.  He helped develop an “in office” video presentation system called “TouchMD” that enables doctors to sit with patients and review treatment options.  He serves as a consultant to several medical equipment companies and found opportunities to teach and lecture.

Business-as-usual no longer is an option in the medical arena.  Doctors, hospitals, medical technology businesses, drug and insurance companies, government agencies and others all are working to find models of health care that will be successful moving into the future.

“The interface with business is very important,” Dr. Greco said.  “Working together we can do more and ultimately make a bigger difference for more patients.”
