Raising Awareness for a Pink Cause

Published:

The Georgia Institute For Plastic Surgery and Turn It Pink empower women with information to make decisions about breast reconstruction after a cancer diagnosis

The surgeons at The Georgia Institute For Plastic Surgery want to empower women through education about their reconstruction options if breast cancer treatment requires a mastectomy. They host #TurnItPink, a series of events throughout October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, to empower women to make the right decision for them when it comes to reconstruction surgeries. The campaign promotes an active and healthy lifestyle and raises funds for community education on reconstruction options. Getting information about reconstruction options early in the process, even before the diagnosis, is improving quality of lives after beating cancer.

GIPS is the only center in Savannah that provides procedures like a DIEP, described in sidebar, and they were the only private practice among 13 surgery centers (including well-known places like M.D. Anderson and Sloan Kettering) to receive funding in a $6.4 million dollar study by the National Institutes of Health on post-mastectomy reconstruction.

Natural Options

The surgeons at GIPS specialize in a reconstruction surgery without implants known as a DIEP procedure. Rather than using a silicone implant, the procedure uses tissue from elsewhere in the body, usually the stomach, thighs or buttocks. It’s similar to a tummy tuck, and they use that fat to reconstruct the breast. Implants can feel natural, but nothing compares to your own tissue. The operation is more involved than a silicone implant procedure, but for many patients, it’s worth it. “It has the highest patient satisfaction of any procedure for breast reconstruction,” says Joe Campbell, M.D. “Patients like it because they don’t have to worry about issues related to an implant and will typically require less operations over time.”

Scenes of the South

FACES OF THE SOUTH-THE TRILOGY GALLERY 5

This is not a celebration. It is not a salute. This, readers, is a manifesto. It is a bold declaration of the richness of the South, of the majestic talents, relentless ambition and singular vision that reside just behind each face you pass in your travels. These are the faces of the people who are creating the new South through the sweat of their brow and the depth of their passions. But if you never look closer you may never know how deep that passion goes, and what it has accomplished.
