Your Life Shouldn’t Cause Pain

Working Hard to Help you Get Back to Doing What you Do Best

If you suffer from chronic persistent pain, you understand how it affects every aspect of your life. It can make it hard to do basically anything such as work, sleep and being with friends and family. Dr. Keith Kirby is working hard to help his patients get back to doing what they do best. As a leader in nonsurgical spine care and interventional pain management, he is committed to getting each patient back to spending time with their family and enjoying everyday activities in life.

Dr. Kirby shares that studies have shown that up to  90 percent of patients with a herniated disk with sciatic leg pain improved and were able to return to work with nonsurgical treatement; however, many people suffer from chronic persistent pain that fails to respond to physical therapy, rest, and anti-inflammatory medications. “It is important to identify the causes of a patient’s persistent pain and develop a treatment plan to address the causes,” says Dr. Kirby. With nearly 20 years of experience, Dr. Kirby specializes in the treatment of pain associated with disorders like degenerative disc disease, disc herniations, spinal stenosis, sciatica, and arthritis of the spine.

Dr. Kirby and his team offer individualized treatment plans for the specific needs of each patient. Medications can be prescribed to help reduce pain, improve mobility, improve sleep and treat any depressive symptoms. For those who need more than medication, Dr. Kirby can perform many types of procedures to alleviate pain in the Savannah Pain Center, a state-of-the-art Ambulatory Surgery Center. Some of the procedures include, epidural steroid injections of lumbar, thoracic, and cervical spine; facet blocks of lumbar, thoracic, and cervical spine; radiofrequency ablation of medial branch nerves to the cervical and lumbar spine; and spinal cord stimulation trials. Dr. Kirby and his team provide each patient a personal and comprehensive treatment plan that best suits their particular pain problem. They closely monitor the patient’s progress to ensure the best possible relief. The quality of care is reflected by the professional and caring attitude of each and every staff member. As Dr. Kirby says, “My entire staff is dedicated to providing our patients with an exceptional patient care experience.”

Back pain & you: 80% of the population will experience back pain at some time in their lives.

Pain in the upper back, or thoracic spine (the area between the neck and lower back) is commonly caused by soft tissue inguries. This can be caused by poor posture, working at the computer or sitting for extended periods of time or looking downward for long periods commonly seen with extended periods of cell phone use. At home treatment can include a combination of ice and heat therapy, inncorporating arm and back stretches and exercises into your routine, over-the-counter medication, and rest. If the pain intensifies or remains it is important to seek medical attention.

Scenes of the South

FACES OF THE SOUTH — THE TRILOGY GALLERY 5

This is not a celebration. It is not a salute. This, readers, is a manifesto. It is a bold declaration of the richness of the South, of the majestic talents, relentless ambition and singular vision that reside just behind each face you pass in your travels. These are the faces of the people who are creating the new South through the sweat of their brow and the depth of their passions. But if you never look closer you may never know how deep that passion goes, and what it has accomplished.
