(Technically) the Best Barista in the Southeast United States
Technically, Starbucks on Broughton has the best barista in the Southeast United States. (Technically, because he placed first in the technical portion of the regional Starbucks barista competition). But that’s not the only thing that makes this coffee shop one of the best in the franchise.
Starbucks on Broughton is shaking things up in Savannah, and other than the newly released Pumpkin Spice Lattes, there’s another reason to visit this location. Steven Caban, a 23-year-old barista on Broughton, recently gained some well-deserved attention by placing third in the regional barista competition out of over 100 participants. The competition had several different levels. In the technical portion of the competition, Caban placed first. The technical portion is the side that really pertains to the knowledge, craft and art of coffee.
“There were judges who would sip the coffee and then take notes. It was a little nerve-racking,” Caban said.
Starbucks on Broughton has always been ahead of the game when it comes to giving their customers the best of the best. The store is special because it was the first in the Southeast United States that implemented a clover brewing system, according to District Manager Mike Turner. The clover brewing system allows the Starbucks barista to craft a single cup of coffee and extract even more flavor, resulting in better, smoother, great-tasting coffee. Caban said the Starbucks on Broughton is a reserve store, so they have a little more than what a normal store would have, such as the reserve coffees, which are single-origin.
Now the store has one of the best baristas in the Southeast United States. So what does he drink? Well, Caban said typically his drink of choice is straight espresso.
“But, I’m kind of a sucker for Pumpkin Spice Lattes,” Caban laughed. “Anyone who doesn't like them is in denial.”
