Phone Scam in Chatham County Area

Published:

An important announcement for all Chatham County Residents:

Spokesman for Chatham County Sheriff, Pete Nichols said there's been an influx of phone scams in the area and they are becoming more efficient in execution.

These scammers have started using a software that shows this number: (912) 652-7600 on the caller ID, which is the Sheriff's office phone number.

The person who picks up one of these phone calls is told they have missed jury duty and have to pay a fine, or that the caller is a part of IRS and is working to collect back taxes. Please advise that the Chatham County Sheriff's Office does not contact anyone by phone when looking to deposit money or pay fines. In previous incidences, investigations have lead to finding that these scams trace back to inmates in the State of Georgia prison system. These phones cannot be traced as they are contraband in the State Prison System.

It is urgent that anyone who may have been a victim of this scam or knows any further information, they should contact the CCSO Investigative Unit at (912) 652-7681
