Five Fun and Corona-Safe Activities for the Fourth of July

Published:

Amidst all that is going on in the world right now, celebrating holidays has certainly become more difficult than in the past. In an effort to avoid unsafe contact from reckless gatherings with hordes of people, many traditional events have been canceled. The fireworks show at River Street, which has been an annual standard for Savannah's locals and tourists for many years, will no longer be held as well as many other events whose planners have deemed it unsafe to host conventional firework displays for the public. What’s a Fourth of July without fireworks? Savannah may not be hosting the patriotic staples most of us have grown up loving and looking forward to every year, but our city is offering a new array of fresh, fun and safe ideas to celebrate your holiday weekend. Here are five entertaining and corona-free things to do this Fourth of July.

1. Savannah Firecracker 5k

This year, Savannah’s How 2 Run will be hosting a 5k and 10k to not only celebrate our Independence Day but to also support local veterans. During the race, participants are encouraged to carry with them flags made from recycled materials which are being sold to racers and proceeds donated to our very own Savannah war veterans.

11 Gateway Blvd S #54, Savannah, GA

Cost: $25-30

2. Bonaventure After Hours July 4th Weekend

Celebrate your holiday with a spooky twist at Bonaventure Cemetery where they will be hosting their 10th annual After Hours July 4th Weekend. Through eeries tales of murderous lovers and scorned bootleggers and other mysterious taboo tales, Shannon Scott, the Bard for the night, shall entertain guests for an uniquely creepy celebration of July Fourth.

330 Bonaventure Rd, Thunderbolt, GA 31404

Cost: $45

3. Old Savannah Trolley Tours

Enjoy your Independence Day with one of coastal Georgia's most iconic tourist attractions: Old Savannah Tours will be open for their regular hours this Saturday to direct and transport guests to all the Independence Day celebrations as well as to enjoy viewing all the decorations set up in honor of this year’s Fourth.

250 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Savannah, GA 31401

4. U.S. Marine Independence Celebration

At Ft. Stewart, a rock show and fireworks display will take place for an Independence celebration sure to impress. The army band 3ID will entertain at the beginning of the night,  and when it becomes dark, the fireworks display will  steal the show. Viewing the show from your vehicle is highly encouraged, so social distancing is no problem.

Wurzburg St, Fort Stewart, GA 3131

5. Tybee Island Beach

This year’s fireworks at Tybee may have been canceled, however, the beach is still open to the public. Nothing speaks patriotism like a picnic or cook-out on the beach!
