Monday 5 Things…..On Remembrance & Veterans Day…..
Today M5T extends a heartfelt thank you on both sides of the border to celebrate the valor and selflessness of those men and women who have fought for and served their countries, to those who are still serving to keep us safe so that we can live free, and to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice of their lives. There are some amazing organizations that work daily to ensure that we never forget. Here are five such organizations.
1. Stop Soldier Suicide:
www.stopsoldiersuicide.org. In 2010 Army veterans Brian Kinsella, Nick Black, and Craig Gridelli co-founded Stop Soldier Suicide to be advocates for veterans living in crisis. In 2013 the VA released a study that there were 22 active duty and veteran suicides per day. Other sources suggest this rate may be low.
2. Wounded Warriors:
www.woundedwarriorproject.org. An incredible organization that provides services for wounded veterans from military service after 9/11.
3. Hero Box:
www.herobox.org. Support for deployed, injured, aging and homeless veterans. You can support a deployed service member (or an entire unit) with custom care packages to soldiers around the world.
4. Canadian Veterans Advocacy:
www.canadianveteransadvocacy.com. Undertakes great work to help homeless Vet’s with Pennies For Vet’s program; also lobbying to abolish the “widow’s tax” and “lump sum disability award”.
5. Semper Fi Fund:
www.semperfifund.org. Provides resources and support for combat wounded, critically ill and catastrophically injured services members of the US Armed Forces.
Lest we forget. If there are other credible organizations for veterans and service men and women that you are aware of, please post them for others to see today. M5T closes today with the poem 'In Flanders Fields', written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae on May 3, 1915 during the Battle of Ypres in the First World War. The war that was to be the "war to end all wars", sadly wasn’t.
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."
