Date/Time

Oct 29, 2019
until 01:00 AM

Description

The 2019 season of the Enmarket Encourage Health Educational Series will wrap up on Tuesday, Oct. 29, with a presentation by sports science professional Katie Balthrop on the benefits of strength training at any age.

The series, presented in a lunch-and-learn format, offers the community the opportunity to hear local experts discuss health-related topics in a non-commercial atmosphere.

Balthrop, who founded Savannah Sport and Wellness, will discuss the cardiovascular, muscular, neurological and skeletal benefits of lifting weights.

“Weight training improves heart health, bone density, coordination and balance, as well as basic strength and power. It benefits every age group, and anyone can develop a safe and effective lifting routine and progression,” she said.

Balthrop offers services from personal training to motion and metabolic analysis, and she has been active as a fitness professional since 2007. She is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists as well as an RRCA Certified Coach. Balthrop holds a Master of Science in sports medicine from Armstrong State University and earned her undergraduate degree in architecture at the University of Notre Dame.

The doors of the Charles H. Morris Center, 10 East Broad St., open at 11:30 a.m. for the presentation, and the program begins at noon. The event is free, but pre-registration is required and can be completed at healthysavannah.org

The Enmarket Encourage Health Series features a wide-ranging of diverse health topics throughout the year. Previous subjects in the 2019 series included meditation for stress relief, food insecurity issues in Savannah and a look at the health impacts of CBD oil.

Additionally, at each presentation, Healthy Savannah, Enmarket and the event sponsors present a $1,000 donation to local charities with the mission of promoting health. The nonprofit organization chosen to recognized during the finale event is the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society.

This marks the sixth year for the series in partnership with Healthy Savannah, the Charles H. Morris Center at Trustees’ Garden, Cha Bella, David’s Dry Cleaners, the city of Savannah, Clover Health, Sandfly Family Dental, Savannah Morning News, Savannah Magazine, St. Joseph’s/Candler and WRHQ.

Scenes of the South

FACES OF THE SOUTH-THE TRILOGY GALLERY 5

This is not a celebration. It is not a salute. This, readers, is a manifesto. It is a bold declaration of the richness of the South, of the majestic talents, relentless ambition and singular vision that reside just behind each face you pass in your travels. These are the faces of the people who are creating the new South through the sweat of their brow and the depth of their passions. But if you never look closer you may never know how deep that passion goes, and what it has accomplished.
