The Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home will launch its Spring 2019 Lecture Series with a lecture by Clayton State University English Professor and Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program Director Dr. Susan Copeland. Her lecture, entitled “Flannery O’Connor, the Goat Man and The Violent Bear It Away,” will identify and discuss a critical link between Flannery O’Connor and Charles McCartney, who was also known as the Goat Man. This event is FREE and open to the public.
Believed to be the inspiration for the Mason Tarwater character in O’Connor’s 1960 novel The Violent Bear It Away, the Goat Man traveled across the country and throughout Georgia on his goat-drawn wagon to preach about the doom that awaited sinners.
A graduate of The Catholic University of America, Copeland’s published works focus on American writers, including Flannery O’Connor and Peter Taylor. To learn more, visit flanneryoconnorhome.org.
