Greatest Pets 2019

Meet the pampered Southern pooches who are truly living the life of Riley.

Saoirse, a 2-year-old Irish Wolfhound, is a trained therapy dog who loves taking trips to the nursing homes around town. Considered small for her breed, she towers over her two brothers, a chihuahua and miniature pinscher, but that doesn’t stop her from thinking she’s a lap dog. Saoirse loves to cuddle with her mom, take walks through Bonaventure, and make appearances in the St. Patrick’s Day parade each year.

Atlas is a 2-year-old American Bully. Don’t let this fool you, he’s actually a big baby who loves treats. After going for a walk, he returns to his yard, army-crawling through the grass all the way to the front door.

Covey, a 5-year-old Deutsch Kurzhaar, is known for stealing everyone’s office chair so he can be the first to greet clients — of both human and fur variety — at Coastal Empire Veterinary Surgery. When he isn’t greeting clients he likes to enjoy the outdoors by going boating and bird hunting.

Max is a 2-year-old Pitbull Terrier who loves going mountain biking and for long walks. His social personality makes him famous around the neighborhood. More importantly, Max is known for making the “Scooby-Doo” sound.

Ditto is a 14-year-old Chow mix rescued from Bonaventure Avenue. He enjoys hanging out with his siblings Geronimo, the cat, and Coco, the dog. Ditto enjoys his daily walk with Coco and returning home to treats — as well as his many squeaky toys.

Rusty is a 4-year-old Golden Doodle who loves going to brunch with his owners. After a nice meal he enjoys running around in the park and getting dirty with his other dog friends.

Bailey is a 3-year-old Rottweiler who takes her job very seriously. She has been named employee of the month every month at The Rug Shoppe ever since she was a puppy. When work time is over, that means it playtime. Bailey loves playing fetch with tennis balls, and has recently become a big fan of the Frisbee.

This outdoorsy 1-year-old Golden Retriever enjoys everything from hunting to hanging out with his parents at home. Boomer fetches pheasant, quail and ducks while hunting, watches the cork while fishing, and likes to end the day with a swim or walk on a sandbar.

Say the word “car ride” and this 5-year-old Pitbull Terrier is ready to go. Long road trips with mom are Freya’s favorite. The only thing that could make riding in the car better is a squeaky toy and a bowl of chicken.

Simba is a well-trained 6-year-old rescue who enjoys using his K9 Nose Work skills to search for guns. He loves being outdoors whether it be camping or hiking, but more importantly the best part of being outdoors is that he can chase squirrels — yet they aren’t as easy to catch as his tennis ball.

Honorable Mention:

Scooter, a Cairn Terrier, was rescued only a few months ago and is already well-settled into his new home. Each day he watches “Braveheart,” takes many walks, and wears a party hat and sunglasses. Though he was edged out of the top 10 for South's Greatest Pets, Scooter collected a viral following with his compelling Facebook videos — making him the South's most creative campaigner.

Scenes of the South

FACES OF THE SOUTH — THE TRILOGY GALLERY 5

This is not a celebration. It is not a salute. This, readers, is a manifesto. It is a bold declaration of the richness of the South, of the majestic talents, relentless ambition and singular vision that reside just behind each face you pass in your travels. These are the faces of the people who are creating the new South through the sweat of their brow and the depth of their passions. But if you never look closer you may never know how deep that passion goes, and what it has accomplished.
