Tour de South: 5 Ways to Tour the Historic City of Savannah

Published:

Tours by horse, pedestrian, pedicab- even ghost- are the best ways to see all that Savannah has to offer.

You'll also learn a whole lot about its storied history along the way, even if you're a local. Here are a few of the different tours Savannah has to offer.

1. Carriage Tours

Not the first but among the best, Savannah Historic Carriage Tours offers a nice selection of its dark green and natural wood carriages ranging from its elegant two-to three-person Victorian-style open-air carriage and two- to four-person white carriage perfect for weddings and special occasions, to its six-person open-air carriages for private tours, and the eight-person canopied wagons. They’re all pulled by handsome, gentle tall and stout Percheron Geldings. And you’ll find the carriage masters to be amiable founts of information.

2. Segway Tours

Segway tours offer a nice intermediate alternative between the large-scale trolley tour and the walking tour, with the added fun of riding on what is essentially a high-tech ground-level stand-up scooter. Which, by the way, you shouldn’t be worried about mastering. It’s easy and the things are made to maintain the proper balance no matter what. For my money, Segway Tours of Savannah is the best, offering great guides on 60- and 90-minute Historical Squares Tours, as well as tours of three historic cemeteries.

3. Trolley Tours

A very familiar sight in Savannah, trolley tours provide a convenient hop-on/hop-off way to get the lay of the city and be dropped off at some of the must-see historic houses and other points of interest. Old Town Trolley Tours, a Historic Tours of America company, claims to have significantly more trolley cars than any other trolley service in town, which allows them to provide the most frequent service and thus shorter waits for visitors hopping back on to continue the circuit. My personal experiences suggest this is true. Also, Old Town Trolley’s Ghosts & Gravestones night tours offer exclusive stops no other company can offer. Plus, securing a Historic Tours of America Hometown Pass means locals can ride for free, though that kind of benefit isn’t exclusive to Old Town Trolley.

4. Haunted Tours

Savannah is one of the most haunted cities in the nation, perhaps the world. No wonder darkness brings out people dressed like undertakers and ghouls as the ghost tour guides begin to gather their slightly trembling minions in the city’s squares and streets. But it may be the company that eschews such theatrics – Blue Orb Savannah Ghost Tours – that offers the best ghost tour in the city. Blue Orb tour guides chill your blood with well researched true stories, really good storytelling, and a certain macabre sensibility that’s somehow quite agreeable. Both Blue Orb’s popular adults-only Zombie Tour and its Savannah Shadows Tour, the latter based on the Savannah Shadows book of ghost stories written by Blue Orb Savannah Ghost Tours Founder Tobias McGriff, are chillingly thrilling.

5. Culinary Tours

Savannah Taste Experience offers up some tasty tidbits of Savannah’s flavorful culinary landscape but also, particularly with its flagship First Squares Food Tour, its cultural and historic landscape, as well. I think most people will appreciate both elements. The former is enough for a pretty good overview, the latter, through small portions, amounts to a good light lunch including a taste of dessert. Among the First Squares’ six stops are Tondee’s Tavern, Pie Society and Savannah Bee Company. Another tour maybe even more appealing for its more substantial fare and off-the-beaten-path quirkiness is STE’s Famous & Secret East Side Food Tour. It also has six stops and includes Smith Brothers Butcher Shop, Zunzi’s and Walls’ BBQ.

Horizons Savannah’s Summer Sizzler 5K

Guests enjoyed a summer race and cool down with watermelon and summer fun, and 5K participants received a special gift. This race was organized in order to benefit Horizons Savannah, a transformative experience for youth in Kindergarten through the 8th grade focused on helping low income students close the achievement gap through academic support and confidence building. The JCB Mud Fest Mud Run June 2017

Hundreds of excited competitors came out to the JCB Mud Run and Dig and Ride events on June 20th to test their strength against the elements. Attendees had to endure 100 Degree heat to complete the 5 mile course made up of over 30 obstacles on this hot Savannah afternoon but everyone in attendance had one focus only - Finishing the Race! The event was once again an incredible success and 100% of race proceeds were donated to the children at The Lady Bamford Center for Early Childhood Development. The Lady Bamford Center was created through a joint partnership of JCB, the City of Savannah, and The United Way of the Coastal Empire. The Center opened on October 16th, 2007 and is operated by Wesley Community Centers of Savannah, Inc. The Wesley Community Center has a long and distinguished history of serving the needs of working mothers and minority families in the community.

Father's Day Unity in the Community Camp Festival

Every 3rd weekend of the month, Unity in the Community of Savannah hosts free public events on River St. that bring the community together. Unity in the Community is a nonprofit organization that promotes and hosts free, family-friendly culturally diverse events to give back to the Savannah community. 3rd Annual 'Crawl of the South'

For the past two years, Savannah has attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the largest bar crawl for two years now, with no success. The event brings in 5,000+ crawlers, but each year they’ve reached within 500 participants of the record, but couldn’t quite grab that winning title. Still, the party continues on, but this year they left Guinness out. The focus this year was on the people, the bars, and the fun. The goal is to complete your scorecard by going to each participating bar on the list. At the end, bring your filled out card to the final location for the after party and a free shirt. It’s one of the biggest events of the year for Savannah. Check out our gallery to see who we ran in to along the way!

12th Annual Savannah Mile

Hundreds gathered for the 12th Annual Savannah Mile presented by the Two Hundred Club of the Coastal Empire that honored our fallen first responders, their families, and our military heroes. The one mile course down Drayton Street from the south end of Forsyth Park to Broughton Street has heats for every fitness level and age group. Our elite first responders and military runners competed for the Full Gear * All Out Flag in the heroes heat in full gear (30 additional pounds). The family friendly Family Fun Run/Walk allowed anyone to participate, including strollers, wheelchairs, and our four legged family members. The Memory Walk had the surviving family members of our fallen first responders walk the mile in remembrance of their loved ones.

Chicago Bears After Party

Members of the 2006 Chicago Bears NFC North Championship team came to the coastal empire on Saturday, May 20th for a fundraiser and promotional event through the The Adrian Peterson Foundation and Wilmington Island Wishes. Players competed in a charity golf tournament at Bacon Park Golf Course during the day, followed by a visit with fans at Britania Pub from 2:30-5:00pm, a gathering open to the public. Former football stars scheduled to attend include recent College Football Hall of Famer Adrian Peterson, the all-time leading rusher in NCAA Division I-A history from Georgia Southern University, former Pro Bowlers Mike Brown and Charles Tillman, former All-Pro Alex Brown and Anthony Adams. Tillman was the 2013 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. The Adrian Peterson Foundation is a non-profit organization which spotlights speech impediments and stuttering problems. In 2012, Peterson published the book “Don’t Dis My Abilities”. He is an accomplished inspirational and motivational speaker.
